Records, 1971-1988.

UWM Archival Collection 9

5.6 cubic ft. (7 boxes)

ABSTRACT: The collection documents affirmative action planning at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM). The records largely consist of affirmative action plans, goals and timetables, and reports. Recruitment of minorities and women was a priority for the Equal Opportunity Office (EOO), and the collection has a large amount of materials on their availability and recruiting. The program manual and files on policies and guidelines detail legislation and procedures for handling gender and racial discrimination cases, filing grievances, and academic staff hiring. The numerous affirmative action reports detail how well UWM met its hiring goals for academic staff and faculty. There are records on the Ad Hoc Committee for the Status of Academic Women, the Advisory Committee for Disabled Students, Minority and Disadvantaged Students Task Force on Planning, and the Wisconsin Task Force on Equal Education Opportunities. The collection also contains correspondence and memos from the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor concerning affirmative action. The files on individual offices and departments contain information on their goals, timetables, and results in reaching affirmative action quotas. The final report of the Search and Screen Committee for the Assistant Chancellor for Equal Opportunity, which is not restricted, contains questions asked of the candidates and describes how the final selection was made.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the materials in this collection are open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The Vice Chancellor and his staff developed UWM's first Affirmative Action Program in September 1973. It included the creation of an Affirmative Action Office and appointment of a Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Affirmative Action as the office's director. The office was created to monitor the University's compliance with federal affirmative action laws as outlined by the Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Higher Education Guidelines (October 1972). The Affirmative Action Office began operation during the 1973-1974 academic year.

Before the 1975-1976 academic year, the Affirmative Action Office was renamed the Equal Opportunity Office. Before the 1988-1989 academic year, the office became the Office of Affirmation Action and Equal Opportunity. The office documents compliance with federal and state affirmative action and equal opportunity laws and investigates complaints of discrimination on campus.
