SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection consists of a folder of photocopied newsclippings, in Polish and in English, dating from the 1940s, which illustrate several of the important events of Schultz's political career. Also included are copies of Schultz's obituaries and other biographical information, four certificates awarded to John and Estelle Schultz in recognition of their efforts in World War II war bond drives, a copy of a report concerning the City of Milwaukee master plan, dated 11 January 1947, a printed constitution and by-laws of the Polish Century Club of Detroit, and a Polish-language booklet containing printed Stations of the Cross (Stacje Drogi Krzyzowej, 1933).  In the second folder are several campaign handbills, a copy of "The Eleventh Ward Bulletin" campaign paper (30 March 1940), and photographs depicting an August 1919 banquet at Schultz's Place, Alderman Schultz on a harbor inspection cruise (1937), the War Memorial erected by the 11th and 24th Wards in 1943, Senator Alexander Wiley, and the 1944-1948 Milwaukee Common Council.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Schultz was a Milwaukee businessperson who served for 16 years as alderperson of the 11th Ward.  Born and raised in Milwaukee, Schultz graduated from South Division High School, and attended Marquette University prior to working as a bookkeeper at the T. S. Wheel Company. He also owned an insurance and real estate agency.  For 32 years, until the time of his death, Schultz operated the Forest Home Arcade, a tavern and bowling alley begun by his father, Stanley.  In 1932 John A. Schultz was elected to the Milwaukee Common Council, where he subsequently became chair of the license and finance committees.  As alderperson, Schultz opposed gambling and crusaded against taverns and tavern owners who violated liquor and vice laws.  Schultz's other activities included founding the Polish American Bowling Association in 1928, and sponsoring many charity bowling tournaments.  He also organized a chapter of the Polish Century Club in Milwaukee, and was a member of the Polish Roman Catholic Union, the Polish Association of America, and other groups.  He and his wife, Estelle, were the parents of four children, Geraldine (Mrs. Claude Pehowski), Renee (Mrs. Leo Ricco), John A., Jr., and Thomas.
