ABSTRACT: Milwaukee Small Collection 3 includes a list of names of Milwaukee-Downer College students who presented the national colors to the First Regiment, Wisconsin National Guard in June, 1917. Also includes a 1964 memorandum by Sammond depicting the World War I activities of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry and explaining military designation and use of flags and standards.

Milwaukee Small Collection 79 includes "A Condensed History of the Milwaukee Auditorium-Arena" written by Sammond in 1965 and papers concerning his World War I experiences as a captain in the 120th Field Artillery Regiment and related topics. Included are letters written by Sammond and his brother Robert Sammond to friends and family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from Camp MacArthur, Texas, September 1917 through February 1918, and then from France, and two army field message books, August 10 through November 15, 1918, used by Sammond.


ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).


ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The 1st Wisconsin Calvary went to Camp Douglas, Wisconsin in June 1917, and from there to Camp MacArthur, Texas in September, at which time it became the 120th Field Artillery of the 32nd division. The 120th was horsed and armed with 3-inch guns and later with French 75mm. guns. The 120th went overseas with the 32nd Division in February 1918 and returned to the United States in June 1919.  At this time the 120th mustered out, and the standard colors returned to Milwaukee-Downer College. In 1964, the College donated the colors to the State Historical Society.
