ABSTRACT: The Noyes papers reflect some of the conservation issues current during the 1920s and 1930s, and include correspondence with other state supporters of conservation such as Mrs. Wilhelmine La Budde, William Aberg, Charles Broughton, Halbert L. Hoard, William Mauthe, and others. Much of the correspondence consists of letters of congratulation at the times of Noyes' various appointments, containing expressions of the writers' views on conservation topics.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Haskell Noyes, Milwaukee businessman, was for many years an active leader in the Wisconsin conservation movement. In 1925 he served as president of the Wisconsin division of the Izaak Walton League of America, and in 1928 was chairman of the national executive committee of the League. He resigned this position when, in the same year, Governor Zimmerman appointed him to the State Conservation Commission. His appointment was renewed by Governor Kohler, and in 1931 Noyes became chairman of the Commission upon the retirement of William Maughe. In 1932 he was appointed to the federal advisory committee on the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. In 1933 he resigned this post to return to his private insurance firm. His interest in conservation continued, however, by 1936 various friends and fellow conservationists sought to promote Noyes for the Republican party nomination for lieutenant governor.
