Records, 1938-1948.

Milwaukee Manuscript Collection DU

4.4 cubic ft. (11 archives boxes)

ABSTRACT: Collection contains the records of the county council, covering the years 1938-1948. The records are primarily arranged in a chronological correspondence file, regardless of the type of document. Thus, meeting minutes, trial committee records, resolutions, and correspondence with the membership and other organizations are found together.

Among the materials found in the correspondence files are numerous newsletters and reports of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and the Wisconsin State Industrial Union Council. The MCIUC was also actively involved during World War II, and the files contain materials from the Milwaukee County Council of Defense, and resolutions condemning Nazism and demanding for the start of a second front. The correspondence includes documentation on efforts to promote more housing in Milwaukee County, and a confidential memorandum on differences between the MCIU and Wisconsin State Industrial Union Council (18 November 1947), which discussed charges of Communist influence and improper representation of Local 1533 at the Fairbanks, Morse and Company. There are some materials on strikes by the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers Local 1111 strike against the Allen-Bradley Company (1938-1939) and the United Auto Workers Local 248 strike against the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company (1946).

The collection contains other membership and financial records, including delegate and attendance records, union ledger cards, and various financial records including audit records, bank books, receipts, tax forms, and strike fund disbursements.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law.   However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for confirming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The Milwaukee County Industrial Union Council was formed in 1938 and affiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations in accordance with the terms of the charter granted by the CIO. Its objectives, according to its constitution, were to "protect, maintain and advance the interests of all working people in its territory, to extend unionism on the basis of industrial organization, to secure and enforce legislation in the interests of the working people, to promote recognition and acceptance of collective bargaining in industry, and to increase public understanding of the labor movement."
