ABSTRACT: The Harry C. Brockel papers relate to the St. Lawrence Development Seaway Corporation, 1954-1968 and include his general files, financial reports, subject files, and clippings. The general files contain the correspondence of H. C. Brockel while he was a member of the St. Lawrence Seaway Advisory Committee between 1954-1968. The files, arranged in chronological order, contain Brockel biographical material, correspondence with midwestern politicians such as U. S. Senator Alexander Wiley, reports to Congress concerning the Seaway, and papers concerning the routine matters of the corporation. The financial records consist of scattered annual reports, audit reports, and budget estimates of the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation between 1955-1967. The subject files, 1957-1968, consist of printed board minutes and reports, printed articles, news releases, and general reports of the St. Lawrence Seaway Development corporation. The remainder of the collection is made up of clippings concerning the corporation, 1960-1968.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Harry C. Brockel, director of the port of Milwaukee and secretary of the Milwaukee Harbor Commission, has been connected with port activities since leaving high school. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, September 18, 1908, the son of Thomas J. and Margaret (Strachan) Brockel, was educated in the public schools of Milwaukee, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1926. Since that time, he has worked with the harbor commission. After acting as a junior clerk and office boy, he was promoted in 1928 to assistant to the traffic director, and in 1936 he was made secretary to the commission. In September 1942, he was appointed municipal director of the port of Milwaukee, a position whose duties included the construction of dock facilities, dredging, transportation, and planning public port improvements. In 1954, the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation was created by Congress to construct the seaway and Brockel was appointed by President Eisenhower as a member of the corporation's five man advisory board. In 1968, H. C. Brockel retired from the corporation.
