SCOPE AND CONTENT: The records of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre document the problems that beset a regional theater while building an audience, maintaining good relations with the community, achieving financial solvency, and attaining administrative and artistic stability. Some general records and records on the establishment of the theater are placed at the beginning of the collection, and some miscellaneous production files and sketches are placed at the end. The bulk of the materials, however, are arranged chronologically by season, beginning with the first in 1953-1954; each season ran from July 1 to June 30. Within each season most papers have been organized in the following categories:

Records of individual productions are limited to financial records, programs, reviews, scripts, and photographs. The records from 1969 to 1978 consist mostly of technical information relating to productions at the Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, and at the smaller experimental theater at Court Street, as well as special productions performed at festivals or on tour. There is also information on the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre's move from the Fred Miller Theatre to the Todd Wehr Theatre in the new Performing Arts Center in the 1969-1970 season.

The category correspondence and general records of Drama, Incorporated, the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, and various groups associated with them, concern all aspects of the theatre's operation. Excluded from this category is correspondence with actors equity and concerning royalties. Minutes and policy statements of the various organizations and general information such as season schedules and membership lists are also located in this category.

Financial records include bank statements, ledgers and balance sheets, information about the theatre's tax-exempt status, yearly financial reports, concession receipts, program advertising contracts, papers concerning the rental of the building and the petty cash fund, and a sampling of invoices taken from approximately 20 linear feat of unprocessed invoices. The invoices are summarized in the ledgers. Other financial records of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre including its journals, 1955-1968, are listed with the general records at the beginning of the collection.

Fundraising records in the general records document the initial fundraising for the Theatre; others, lists of season ticket holders, statements of printers and ticket agencies, and various student programs. Insurance records pertain to the insurance for the theater building, and unemployment compensation and hospitalization plans for employees. Legal records refer to infrequent suits in which the theatre was involved. Royalties, rental fees, and performing rights concern securing and releasing rights to perform plays and royalties paid for them.

The series entitled unions includes material on the Theatre's relationship with the actors' equity association, the Milwaukee Theatrical Stage Employees, the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers (ATPAM), the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), and others. Contracts were negotiated between the theatre management and all those employed by the theatre.

Scripts are present infrequently until the 1963-1964 season. Personnel records include photographs, resumes, applications and, from the earlier seasons, audition materials of cast and staff members. Technical production materials are, for the most part, limited to information about props and costumes. Operational records include permits and other papers relating to the physical operation of the theater. Included with the photographs are those of productions and staff members. Promotion records consist of press releases, radio and television announcements, and papers regarding speaking engagements and guest appearances of staff members and actors. Publications include pamphlets of theatrical organizations in Milwaukee and the United States.

The records of the Fred Miller Theatre League date from 1955 to 1963 and include minutes, corporate records, correspondence, membership lists, and production material for Fanfare, the league's annual fundraising show. Records of the School of Professional Arts include student records, grades, examinations, and routine correspondence from 1955 to 1959.

Photographs of actors, actresses, and plays are available in boxes 152-199. They were organized in 1995 as part of an internship at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and integrated into the rest of the collection. The photographs are listed in alphabetical order. They are physically housed in the following boxes:

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY NOTE: Milwaukee Repertory Theatre was begun in 1953, when Mary Widrig John organized Drama, Incorporated as a nonprofit stock company and parent corporation for a community theater and drama school. The Fred Miller Theatre opened on January 25, 1955, with a production of Sabrina Fair. Until 1961 the theater used the star system, performing Broadway hits; in that year the theater established a resident professional company of actors and began presenting classical and contemporary plays. In 1964 the current name of Milwaukee Repertory Theatre was selected to better represent the nature and the location of the theater.

Within the short period of twenty years, the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre grew from a community theater with a primarily local orientation into a professional repertory theater with a national reputation. In the beginning Mary Widrig John recognized Milwaukee's need for a community theater, and in 1953 she organized Drama, Incorporated as a nonprofit stock company and the parent corporation for a community theater and drama school. The organization was incorporated in 1954 with Mary John as president and majority stockholder.

Citywide fundraising provided resources to rent and remodel the Oakland movie house into an intimate arena theater; Milwaukee architects and contractors donated their services to this effort. When the theater opened on January 25, 1955, it had been renamed the Fred Miller Theatre, in honor of Frederick C. Miller, head of the fund drive who had been killed in a plane crash. The first production at the Fred Miller Theatre was Sabrina Fair, starring Jeffrey Hunter. For several years the Theatre operated under the star system, performing former Broadway hits.

The Drama, Incorporated School of the Professional Arts was established in 1955 to train students in acting, directing, and technical production work, but financial problems forced the school to close in 1959. Subsequently, the Theatre hired and trained several "production fellows" each season. To emphasize the community nature of the theater, the Fred Miller Theatre League--women volunteers who raised funds and did backstage work--was founded as a separate corporation. In 1963 the corporation was dissolved and volunteer activity was organized under a committee of Drama, Incorporated.

From 1958 to 1966 internal stress became almost a way of life within both Drama, Incorporated and the Fred Miller Theatre. Administrative problems were severe. The Board of Directors of Drama, Incorporated questioned the legality of a nonprofit stock company, and in 1958, in the midst of Board, management, and staff conflict, Mary John resigned as president of Drama, Incorporated and as manager of the Theatre. Subsequently, Drama, Incorporated was reorganized as a nonprofit, non-stock corporation with an executive committee primarily responsible for policy decisions. In 1963 the Board of Directors streamlined its size from thirty to eighteen members, and in 1966 Drama, Incorporated was renamed the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Inc.

Reorganization did not resolve questions of authority, however. Attempting to achieve internal stability, the Board of Directors tried various types of theater management--managing director, general manager and artistic director, and producer. The structure that proved most efficient was established in 1966 when Tunc Yalman was hired a artistic director and Charles McCallum was given the title of managing director. McCallum had been with the Theatre since its inception in the 1950's and was the source of much imagination and continuity. Yalman served as artistic director for five years, and was succeeded by Nagle Jackson in the 1971-1972 season. McCallum continued as managing director.

Artistically, too, the Fred Miller Theatre faced many problems. In 1961 the Theatre discontinued the star system, establishing instead a resident professional company of actors. The nature of the plays produced was also changed--rather than Broadway hits, quality classical and contemporary plays were to be performed. Although the new policy met with critical acclaim, box-office receipts dropped. Annual community-wide fundraising drives were begun in 1963 to keep the theater solvent. As the Theatre maintained high standards of production, season subscriptions gradually increased and students, attracted by reduced rates and special school rates, also joined the audiences.

In 1964 the Theatre underwent another change of names, becoming the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. The new name better represented the nature as well as the location of the theater. With the opening of the Milwaukee Performing Arts Center in September 1969, the MRT also moved to a new home in the Todd Wehr Theatre. Performances outside the Theatre, tours throughout the state, and laudatory reviews from New York critics indicated that the MRT had moved beyond its problems and had matured into one of the finest regional theaters in the country. That the community recognized that fact is also evident; during the 1970-1971 season the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre had 12,000 subscribers and did 94% of capacity business.
