ABSTRACT: The collection consists of two volumes of records: a patient register (1859-1905), and a minute book (1859-1962). The patient register lists patient names, country of origin, age, date of admission, disease, and in some cases the attending physician (1859-1900). There is no record for the years 1901-1902. Individual patient accounts are listed for 1903-1905. Board of Directors' meetings are documented by minutes of annual and special meetings (1859-1962). These minutes record by-laws, election of members, and financial policy decisions.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: St. Mary's Hospital was incorporated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1859, as a Catholic hospital run by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph. The hospital admitted patients needing a variety of medical treatment. Included were soldiers and sailors of the Civil War and the War of 1812. The hospital was administered by a Board of Directors of the Sisters of Charity.
