Ozaukee County (Wis.). Register of Deeds.Grantor/Grantee indexes [microform], 1835-1908.Ozaukee Series 93 microfilm reels (35mm) |
ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).
ARRANGEMENT: Deed volumes were labeled alphabetically (A-J) until 1854. At that time Ozaukee County was formed out of part of Washington County. The Washington County Register of Deeds transferred volumes A-J to the Ozaukee County Register of Deeds who labeled the subsequent volumes numerically. The volumes are roughly chronological by date recorded.
The grantor/grantee index entries in the deed index books on microfilm reel 1 cover deed volumes A-I. Deed volume J is indexed at the beginning of that volume (see Ozaukee Series 13). The entries on microfilm reel 2 and part of reel 3 refer to deed volumes 1-31. Each deed index book covers a range of deed volumes (for example, volumes A-C or volumes 13-16). On the microfilm reels, the deed index books are arranged by roll and, thereafter, by item. [NOTE: Microfilm reel 1 begins with item number 5.] Each deed index book is divided into sections for each deed volume. The deed volume sections are sometimes denoted by tabs on the left side of the index book pages, but not always. So, the researcher must take care to note where one deed volume section ends and the next one begins. The deed volume sections are arranged alphabetically by the first letter of the grantor's surname, but not thereafter (for example, all of the grantor last names that begin with the letter "A" are grouped together, but "Adams" might follow "Anderson" in the list). [NOTE: After the alphabetic sequence (A-Z) is complete in each deed volume section, there may be additional name entries listed.] In addition to grantor names, the entries in each deed volume section list grantee names and the page number where the deed can be found in the corresponding deed volume in Ozaukee Series 13.
The grantee index (identified as index volume 1 on the microfilm) covers deed volumes 30-52. Note that the corresponding series of deeds (Ozaukee Series 13) ends with deed volume 35. Deed volumes 36-52 are at the Ozaukee County Register of Deeds. Entries in this index give the instrument number, name of grantee and grantor, deed volume, page number in the deed volume where the deed can be found, and name of instrument.
The grantor indexes (identified as index volumes 18-19 on the microfilm) cover deed volumes 20-39. Entries include the information found in the grantee index as well as the time of reception of the instrument, land description, to whom the instrument was delivered, and fees assessed. [NOTE: The grantor indexes are all contained on microfilm reel 3. Grantor index (volume 18) (roll 4, item 4) immediately follows the grantee index (roll 4, item 3). Grantor index (volume 19, M-Z) (roll 5, item 1) is the next item on the reel. At this point the microfilm must be turned right side up again as the remaining film on the reel was filmed upside down relative to the prior film on the reel. Also, the index volume was filmed in reverse order (in other words, it proceeds from Z-M). This item on the microfilm reel is a continuation of the last item on the reel -- grantor index (volume 19, A-M) (roll 4, item 5). They were filmed out of sequence. The last item was filmed in reverse alphabetical order (M-A) as well.]
