Special Collections

The UWM Libraries' Division of Archives and Special Collections includes the Archives, on the Library's second floor, and Special Collections, located on the fourth floor.

The Archives consists of the Milwaukee Area Research Center, the UWM Manuscript Collection, and the University Archives, and is responsible for the university's records management program. The Archives contains historical resources from Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Washington, and Waukesha Counties, including private papers from individuals, such as letters, diaries, and photographs; records from businesses and organizations; and records from UWM. The Archives also holds a reference collection of published materials that includes histories of area communities, businesses, and churches; books on Milwaukee's buildings and architecture; and UWM histories, yearbooks, and student newspapers. The Archives serves as a repository for the records of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

Special Collections includes rare books, early printed works, and first, special and limited editions within a broad range of collections, including the Philip J. Hohlweck and Allen Slichter Civil War Collections; the UWM Authors Collection; the UWM History of American Nursing Collection; the UWM Book Arts Collection; the J. Max Patrick Literature Collection (mainly 17th century); the Shakespeare Research Collection; the John S. Best Collection (dogs and dog breeding); and the George Hardie Aviation and Aerospace History Collection. Special Collections also holds comprehensive collections of primary printed sources in Art and Architecture (including a subject collection on Frank Lloyd Wright); Gay and Lesbian Studies; Irish Literature; Jewish Studies; Local Small-Press Publishing; Native American Literature; Printing and Publishing History; and Women's Studies. Special Collections oversees several ongoing programs, including the Book FOR[u]Ms Book Artist Speaker Series, The Scholar and The Library Speaker Series, the biennial UWM Authors Recognition Ceremony, and the Golda Meir Library Exhibition Program. Special Collections also serves as host for the monthly UWM Great Books Roundtable Discussion, and as the host institution for the Bad Water Book Club (a southeastern Wisconsin book arts interest group). The Fromkin Memorial Collection, a collection of printed materials on American social justice, is located in Special Collections.

UW-Milwaukee is a public institution, and the Division of Archives and Special Collections is available to any individual who is interested in conducting research and willing to use the materials in accordance with the Division's policies and procedures. The Division of Archives and Special Collections also maintains a committed outreach program designed to offer presentations, exhibits, workshops, bibliographic instruction sessions, special lectures and classroom visits, professional consulting, and mentoring in archives and special collections for the UWM community and for educational and community groups in the greater Milwaukee area.
