Subject Listing: Civil War |

During the Civil War private railway companies transported
union soldiers for the U.S. government. The above receipt, from 1861, shows that the
La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad Company received $2.24 for transporting Captain
H.G. Maloy from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Kilbourn City (present day Wisconsin
Dells), Wisconsin.
