Subject Listing: Civil War |


Towards the latter part of the 19th century, citizens of
Milwaukee formed a committee to erect a monument commemorating the service of
local soldiers during the Civil War. On January 1, 1898, Charles M. Wood,
Vice Consul General of the United States from Italy, wrote to the committee
verifying that sculptor John S. Conway had created a plaster mold of the
monument and was preparing it for casting in bronze.
