During the 1970s the University of Wisconsin System considered
opening a law school at the Milwaukee campus to go along with the law school
already in Madison. This clipping from the August 9, 1972, Milwaukee Journal
demonstrates that the idea was supported by a variety of groups on the Milwaukee
and Madison campuses, but faced opposition from a number of other groups at both
schools as well as the dean of Marquette University's law school. A public law
school in Milwaukee was promoted as a way to provide access to a legal education
for those in the Milwaukee area who might not be able or willing to pay tuition
at Marquette University's law school as well as those who would prefer evening
and summer classes. The University of Wisconsin system turned down the
proposal for a second state-funded law school later in 1972.
