ABSTRACT: Records of a Milwaukee-based professional medical organization. Formed in 1943 from the merger of the Society for the Study of Asthma and Allied Conditions and the American Association for the Study of Allergy, the organization was originally named the American Academy of Allergy (AAA); in 1982 the name changed to the American Academy of Allergy & Immunology (AAAI); the current name, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) was adopted in 1995. Records exist in the collection from the two predecessor organizations, though the bulk of the materials, including photographs and textual records, are from the AAA, the AAAI and the AAAAI.
ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: Member files, oral histories and scholarship applications are restricted, otherwise there are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

ARRANGEMENT: This inventory represents the fourteen series of the AAAAI Archives which have been processed. Web pages will be updated as more records are processed. The collection is arranged by series. The files are organized alphabetically by personal name, name of office, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memos, and reports. Series 2A, Annual Meeting Sessions, is arranged chronologically by year of the meeting, then by session number if applicable, then by title.
ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY NOTE: The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology was formed by the merger of the American Association for the Study of Allergy and the Association for the Study of Asthma and Allied Conditions. A group of West Coast and Midwest physicians formed the American Association for the Study of Allergy in 1923 and the group became known as the Western Society. In 1924, New York physicians interested in allergy met and formed the Association for the Study of Asthma and Allied Conditions; this group became known as the Eastern Society. When the Western and Eastern Societies merged in December 1943, the new association was named the American Academy of Allergy. The Executive Office was established in Milwaukee in 1948. In 1982, the name was changed to the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology and in 1995 to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
