UWM Librarian Featured in National PublicationJohn Hubbard, Electronic Resources Librarian at UWM Libraries, has been recognized by the Library Journal as one of the library world’s “2006 Movers and Shakers,” and is profiled in the March 15 issue of the national magazine. Hubbard and 50 other librarians, library workers and vendors, were chosen, according to the Library Journal, because they “are transforming libraries for the future.” The magazine notes several of Hubbard’s library-related contributions including his Library Link of the Day (www.tk421.net/librarylink) and LISWiki (www.liswiki.com), an open publication encyclopedia devoted to library and information science. At UWM, Hubbard serves as the virtual reference administrator and trainer, and has worked to implement a number of digital initiatives focused on improved library access and usability. Hubbard earned his MLIS from Drexel University in 2000 and joined the Research and Instructional Support Department at UWM Libraries in 2001.
Digital Postcard Collection Expanded
An additional 200 postcards have been added to Greetings from Milwaukee: Selections from the Thomas and Jean Ross Bliffert Collection , a digital collection available from the UWM Libraries website at: http://www.uwm.edu/Library/digilib/postcards/index.html. The expanded digital collection consists of 400 postcards featuring historic Milwaukee buildings, businesses, parks, and cartoons advertising beer produced and served in Milwaukee. Flo Kardoskee, a graduate student in the School of Information Studies completed this digital project as part of his library fieldwork in the spring of 2006 under the direction of Michael Doylen, Head of Archives, and Krystyna Matusiak, Digital Collections Librarian.
California Book Artist to Visit This Spring
These two events are part of a 5-day artist residency in Milwaukee co-sponsored by Special Collections at the UWM Libraries and Woodland Pattern Book Center, and supported in part by the Friends of the Golda Meir Library and the Mary L. Nohl Foundation. Chen will also offer two workshops and a Master Class at Woodland Pattern, 720 Locust St., Milwaukee (for information, contact Woodland Pattern Book Center). Chen creates and publishes many sculptural, limited-edition artist's books at her Flying Fish Press in Berkeley, California. She teaches bookmaking workshops around the country and is on the faculty at Mills College where she also received her MA in Book Arts. AGSL Active With New and Continuing FellowshipsThe American Geographical Society Library is pleased to now have two ongoing short-term fellowship programs. The first, inaugurated in 2000, was the result of a gift from Mrs. Helen M. Best in memory of her late husband, John S. Best, a prominent Milwaukee attorney. This fund has enabled the Library to bring two or more scholars to Milwaukee every year to further their research efforts. Awards may be for periods of one to four weeks. The Best Fellows for 2006 are Prof. Richard W. Dixon, Texas State University, who is analyzing the content of early climatology textbooks, and Innes M. Keighren, doctoral candidate, University of Edinburgh, who is researching the influences of Semple’s Influences of Geographic Environment (1911) in the United States. Dr. Robert McColl of Lawrence, Kansas has provided funding for a new fellowship: the McColl Research Program. Recipients must promote geographical literacy to the broadest possible community, especially those who can apply the data and analyses. This provision is insured through a two-part stipend, the first provided at the time of the residency, and the second when the fellow's contribution is accepted by a mutually agreed-upon publisher. The 2006 McColl Fellows are Dr. Irakli Iakobashvili, Head, Division of Informatics & Communications, Parliament of Georgia and Dr. Alexei Postnikov, Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Iakobashvili is researching W.O Field Archive materials; Dr. Postnikov’s project concerns American and British exploration of Siberia and its importance in nature, natives and Russians of these frontier regions (19th –early 20th centuries). Dr. Postnikov, who spent March in Milwaukee, spoke at a public meeting of the Map Society of Wisconsin on March 28. For the years 2004-06, the AGS Library has had additional fellowship funding from UWM's Center for International Education. In 2006, a special CIE funded fellowship has been awarded to Dr. Zokirjon A. Saidboboev of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for his study of “European historical-cartographic information concerning Central Asia.” Christopher Baruth
Introducing BadgerCat, the New Wisconsin-Wide Library CatalogUWM Libraries, in collaboration with nearly 500 other Wisconsin libraries, now offers BadgerCat, a new way to identify library resources—books, journals, DVDs, CDs, maps, and more—located in the state. To use BadgerCat, click on WorldCat on the UWM Libraries homepage and then select BadgerCat in the database menu. After selecting BadgerCat, click on the “Limit to:” dropdown menu to choose from various subsets of Wisconsin libraries (for example, University of Wisconsin libraries or the South Central Library System). Six interface languages, including Spanish, are offered. Enhancements to BadgerCat are planned for this summer.

We are requesting any UWM faculty or academic staff member who has written, edited, translated, or illustrated a book, has composed music for a published score or recording, or has had a primary role in creating a commercially distributed film or video since the last event in Fall 2004, to contact the Libraries so that we may include them in this year's ceremony. Milwaukee Art Museum Director to Speak at the Libraries
The Quest for Social Justice III Now Available The UWM Libraries have published The Quest for Social Justice III: The Morris Fromkin Memorial Lectures, 1992-2002. Edited by former UWM Libraries Director Peter G. Watson-Boone, the book gathers together recent presentations by Fromkin Research Grant recipients. Topics range from the experiences of African American women firefighters to FDR’s nearly forgotten information agency, from the production of a play dramatizing a bitter meat-packers strike to the life of a community recreation pioneer. Contributors include Abba Eban, and UWM faculty and staff members Diane Amour, Michael A. Gordon, Don Green, Mordecai Lee, Genevieve G. McBride, Markos J. Mamalakis, and Lois M. Quinn. Other contributors are Detine L. Bowers, Robert Drago, Fred Muscavitch, Jacqueline Schellinger, Fran Coffey Stanat, Rhea Steinpreis, and Janice Yoder. The latest volume in an ongoing series, Quest III contains the text of ten lectures and a DVD with supplementary materials. Limited Edition Book Added to Best CollectionA limited, proof edition of Irish Terrier National Specialty & Best in Show Winners, edited by John Childers, has been donated to Special Collections’ John S. Best Collection, which focuses primarily on rare and special materials on dogs and dog breeding. Mary Best, daughter of John Best, and Suzanne Griffiths presented the book on February 8. John S. Best was a prominent Milwaukee attorney, book-collector, dog-breeder and conservationist, who died in 1989. To honor his memory, his wife, Helen M. Best donated his library and generous funding to support the John S. Best Collection.
Junior League Visits UWM Libraries

Libraries Create Wireless Computer Teaching LabIn response to a growing demand for course-integrated library instruction, the UWM Libraries have created a wireless computer teaching lab, funded by student Educational Technology fees. The new lab features computer tables, task chairs, and 30 wireless laptop computers that utilize UWM’s ProwlNet wireless network for Internet access to the library catalog PantherCat and the Libraries’ 150-plus research databases. Wireless laptops allow the Libraries’ Research and Instructional Support Department to instruct larger groups of students, teach smaller classes in a seminar-type format, and offer hands-on instruction in different areas of the library such as the Conference Center or Archives. Julie Chen, an internationally recognized book artist, letterpress printer, structuralist, teacher, and proprietor of Flying Fish Press, will visit Milwaukee as part of the Book FOR[u]Ms Book Artist Series. Chen will present a free public lecture Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in the UWM Libraries’ Special Collections. She will lead a workshop for UWM students and invited guests on Tuesday, May 9. 
The UWM Libraries will host a Fall 2006 event honoring those faculty and staff whose published monographs and recordings have been added to the UWM Authors Collection over the past two years. This event has been held every two years since its inception in 1992 and it has become a significant tradition.
David Gordon, Director of the Milwaukee Art Museum, will speak at the UWM Libraries on Wednesday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. His talk is titled “Is There a Conflict Between Being Both an Icon and an Art Museum?” and is free and open to the public. The presentation is part of the Friends of the Golda Meir Library’s Annual Meeting, and will be held in the Golda Meir Library’s fourth floor Conference Center.
