2004 UWM Authors Recognition CeremonyThe Golda Meir Library will host a Fall 2004 event honoring those faculty and staff whose published monographs and recordings have been added to the UWM Authors Collection over the past two years. This event has been held every two years since its inception in 1992 and it has become a significant tradition. We are requesting any UWM faculty or academic staff member who has written, edited, translated, or illustrated a book, has composed music for a published score or recording, or has had a primary role in creating a commercially distributed film or video since the last event in Fall 2002, to contact the library so that we may include them in this year's ceremony. Please contact Max Yela at 229-4345 or by email: maxyela@uwm.edu. For a number of years, the Libraries have collected published monographs for the UWM Authors Collection, and also have posted them on the Special Collections website: http://www.uwm.edu/Libraries/special/authors.htm These works now number over 1800. Please help the Libraries make this event a success by sending information about your monographic publications of the last two years. Book Arts ExhibitionAs part of its ongoing series of exhibitions highlighting the use by
Wisconsin artists of the book as an art medium, the UWM Libraries present
an exhibition of letterpress and book works by the art faculty at UW-Stevens
Point. The exhibition will be on view in the Fourth Floor Exhibition Gallery,
Golda Meir Wisconsin has long been the heartland of the American book-arts movement. While Madison and Milwaukee have established and well-known book-arts communities, noted book artists thrive throughout the state. This exhibition brings focus to the book works of nationally-recognized UW-Stevens Point artists and designers such as Diana Black, Caren Heft, Jeff Morin, John Smith, and Kristin Thielking. The exhibition also highlights the faculty's use of book expression as a teaching tool through the work of their students. Gallery Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4:30 pm, or by appointment. Friends Used Book SaleThe Friends of the Golda Meir Library held their Spring used book sale April 12-14 in the fourth floor Conference Center of the Golda Meir Library. More than $4600 was raised. All proceeds benefit the UWM Libraries. The Fall used book sale will be held October 18-20. If you would like to donate books for the sale, please contact Janet Padway at 229-6458. Customer Satisfaction SurveyThis spring, in order to assess the quality of their services and collections, the UWM Libraries, along with other UW libraries, will be participating in LibQUAL+, a web-based survey instrument designed to gather library users' opinions. LibQUAL+ evolved from a conceptual model based on the SERVQUAL instrument, a popular tool for assessing service quality in the private sector. LibQUAL+ gives libraries the data to improve services in response to user feedback and peer institution assessment information. Offered by the Association of Research Libraries, the survey and analysis tool is being employed by over 400 institutions in 2003. The UWM Libraries have named Michelle Harrell Washington as the LibQUAL+ liaison. She will be assisted by a team comprised of UWM Libraries staff members Michael Doylen, Susan Foran, Krystyna Matusiak, Vanaja Menon, Andy Ritter and Kristin Woodward. New E-Mail Express ComputersThe UWM Libraries are providing access to non-UWM e-mail services through two new "E-Mail Express" computers located on the north wall of the Research and Instructional Support Area (near the hallway to the Interlibrary Loan Office). This service was requested by UWM students who forward PantherMail to accounts through commercial Internet service providers. Visitors to UWM may also use these computers to access e-mail services of other UW campuses and elsewhere. Other workstations in the RIS Area continue to be available for library-related reference and research purposes, and for access to PantherMail. |
