Heynen Delivers Fromkin Lecture; Fromkin Volume PublishedOver 230 people attended this year’s Morris Fromkin Memorial Lecture, presented by Nik Heynen, on November 3 in the Golda Meir Library’s Conference Center. The title of his talk was “Starving for Revolution: The Milwaukee Black Panther Party’s Struggle to Feed the Hungry.” Heynen, Assistant Professor in UWM’s Geography Department, is the 2005 recipient of the UWM Libraries’ distinguished Fromkin Research Grant and Lectureship and his presentation was the 36th in the Fromkin lecture series. Prior to the lecture, the Libraries announced the publication of The Quest for Social Justice III: The Morris Fromkin Memorial Lectures 1992-2002. The volume—edited by former Libraries Director Peter Watson-Boone and funded by the Fromkin family’s Strelsin Foundation—gathers together recent presentations by Fromkin Research Grant recipients. Topics range from the experiences of African American women firefighters to FDR’s nearly forgotten information agency, from the production of a play dramatizing a bitter meat-packers strike to the life of a community recreation pioneer. Contributors include Abba Eban, and UWM faculty and staff members Diane Amour, Michael A. Gordon, Don Green, Mordecai Lee, Genevieve G. McBride, Markos J. Mamalakis, and Lois M. Quinn. Other contributors are Detine L. Bowers, Robert Drago, Fred Muscavitch, Jacqueline Schellinger, Fran Coffey Stanat, Rhea Steinpreis, and Janice Yoder The latest volume in an ongoing series, Quest III contains the text of ten lectures and a DVD with supplementary materials. For information about obtaining a copy, please call (414) 229-6202. * The Libraries are accepting proposals for the 2006 Fromkin Research Grant and Lectureship. To celebrate UWM’s 50th anniversary in 2006, the Fromkin Research Grant Committee invites scholars to submit proposals that focus on UWM and social justice. However, all proposals that relate to the issue of social justice will be considered. The grant recipient will deliver the Morris Fromkin Memorial Lecture during the Fall 2006 semester. All full-time UWM faculty and academic staff, individually or as a group, are eligible to apply. The deadline for proposals is December 1, 2005. The recipient of the $5,000 award will be announced at the beginning of the Spring semester. Browsing Collection Latest Addition to Libraries’ Welcoming Efforts
Located in Current Periodicals, the Browsing Collection is drawn from the Libraries regular acquisitions flow, and includes recently published fiction, biography, and poetry, as well as new books on local history and culture, communities and heritage, hobbies and recreation, and more. Books circulate from the Main Circulation Desk and are integrated into the main collection as newer items arrive.
Book Your Instruction Session Now!The UWM Libraries’ Research and Instructional Support Department (RIS) invites all faculty and UWM instructors to include a course-integrated library instruction session in each of their courses this semester. Members of the RIS team will lead your students through the process of information selection, retrieval, and evaluation using the academic resources at the UWM Libraries. Students benefit most from their library sessions when coordinated with a research assignment and when that assignment is due in close proximity to a library visit. If you would like assistance developing a library assignment or enhancing existing research activities, please let us know. To request a library session, please contact Molly Mathias at 229-6828.
New Research TutorialNew this fall is Searchpath, an online tutorial highlighting research resources at the UWM Libraries. Searchpath also provides information literacy tips for using and evaluating information from the public Web. This tutorial complements existing library instruction and can be linked from D2L. Faculty interested in requiring this tutorial for courses should call Sue Coenen at 229-4659 to arrange for a D2L quiz component.
1929 Zionist Congress Sketch Portfolio Given to LibrariesWhen the World Zionist Congress met in Zurich in 1929, the noted Swiss art dealer Toni Aktuaryus hosted a reception for the delegates at his well-known art gallery. To mark the occasion, Aktuaryus commissioned artist Gregor Rabinovitch to sketch the reception’s attendees. These sketches were then lithographed and assembled into a portfolio, of which 125 were printed, and subsequently numbered and signed by the artist. The portraits include many of the most renowned names in Zionism, including physicist Albert Einstein, Hadassah founder Henrietta Szold, Revisionist Zionism founder Ze’ev Jabotinsky, Rabbi Ben Zion Usiel, who would become the first Sephardi chief rabbi of Israel, and Chaim Weizmann, who would become Israel’s first president. This rare item was given to Special Collections by Aktuaryus’s daughter, Fox Point resident Yvonne Aktuaryus Dunkleman. In 1997, Dunkleman gave Special Collections a very rare set of catalogs from her father’s gallery entitled Galerie und Sammler covering the years 1932-1946.
Libraries Receive Generous BequestThe Libraries received a remarkable double bequest last year from Ernest R. Ostrem, a UWM alumnus and Marquette University librarian, who died in September 2004 at the age of 83. Ostrem donated nearly 3000 high-quality hardbound books in a wide range of subjects, as well as a significant monetary gift for the purchase of new books. “It was an amazing donation,” said UWM acquisitions librarian Diane Osborne. “The books were in fine condition and quite varied; most were solid classics in their fields. They reflected a broad and lifelong education.” According to a friend, former UWM librarian Ellen Murphy, the books spanned Ostrem’s interests—including art and architecture, literature, anthropology, history, theater, and music—and that many were acquired on his travels in the U.S. and abroad. She said that Ostrem, who earned his master’s degree in library science from UWM, wanted to share his books, and recognized the quality of the UWM Libraries’ collection.

The creation of a Browsing Collection is the Libraries’ latest accomplishment in response to student needs for friendly and welcoming study areas. Last fall the Libraries opened the Gathering Place in the east wing, boasting an attractive coffee shop, and virtually the entire library was equipped with wireless access to the internet. This summer, new comfortable seating was installed in the west wing lobby, inviting students to reflect, relax, or study in groups.
