Wireless LibraryMuch of the Golda Meir Library is now equipped with wireless access to the Internet, as part of I&MT’s campus program, PROWLnet. Areas that now offer “hotspots” (wireless network access points) include, in the West Wing: Archives, Reference, the large study areas on the second and third floors, and the lounge area next to Circulation; and in the East Wing: the café and Reserve reading area, Music and Curriculum Libraries, and AGSL. Also wired are Special Collections, the Center bridges on the second and third floors, and the West lower level study area. 150 Years of The New York Times OnlineThe UWM Libraries are pleased to announce electronic access to the historical New York Times. Every issue from 1851 through 2001 has been digitized from cover to cover, including news stories, editorials, photos, graphics, and advertisements. Searchers can use basic keyword, advanced, guided, and relevancy search techniques to locate information. Or they can browse through issues page by page, as one would browse a printed edition. Search results lists provide bibliographic information, including date, issue, article headline, page number, and byline (where given). Users may choose to display the full page image of any page in any issue. The Times may be accessed through the ProQuest Historical Newspapers database at http://www.uwm.edu/Library/ris/databases/#p.
Friends Used Book SaleThe Friends of the Golda Meir Library fall used book sale, held Oct. 18-20, raised more than $5,300, a record amount for a Friends sale. Proceeds from the sale benefit the UWM Libraries. Anyone interested in donating books, music recordings, and videos to the UWM Libraries, either for possible addition to the Libraries' holdings or for the next book sale, should contact Janet Padway at (414) 229-6458 or jgpadway@uwm.edu.
This Year’s John S. Best FellowsThe American Geographical Society Library is pleased to announce the Best Research Fellowships for 2004: Dr. Paul Longley Arthur, Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia; Dr. M. Sean Chenoweth, University of Louisiana-Monroe; Sandra Gaskell, Mariposa, CA; and Viva G. Nordberg, University of Kentucky. The Helen and John S. Best Research Fellowship program, supplemented in 2004-2006 by a grant from UWM's Center for International Education, is intended to help bring to the AGS Library scholars who reside beyond commuting distance of UWM, and whose research would benefit from extensive use of the Library. John S. Best, a partner for over 40 years in the law firm of Michael Best & Friedrich, as well as a conservationist, hunter, and dog breeder, built an extensive collection of books on a variety of subjects before his death in 1989. To honor his memory, his wife, Helen M. Best, donated her husband's library to the UWM Libraries in 1997 along with significant support for the John S. Best Research Fellowship program.
PsycARTICLES Now Available PsycARTICLES is a searchable full text database on current issues in psychology, covering general psychology and specialized, basic, applied, clinical and theoretical research in psychology. The database contains more than 34,000 searchable full text articles from 43 journals published by the American Psychological Association and eight journals from allied organizations. It contains all journal articles, letters to the editor and errata from each of the 51 journals. Coverage spans from 1987 to the present. All journals included in this database are indexed in PsycINFO. PsycARTICLES can be linked to through the UWM Libraries Databases A-Z web pages or found through university computer accounts at
New Scanner AvailableLibrary users have often requested to take current journals to a campus computer lab to scan articles or pictures. Since current issues of journals are not allowed to leave the lower level and generally do not circulate, until this summer the answer was unfortunately, “no.” Current Periodicals/Microforms is very pleased to announce that equipment that will accommodate such requests is now available in the CP Reading Room. The new workstation is equipped with an HP Scanjet 8200, 8-1/2” x 14” flatbed color scanner with two scanning software options. The first, HP Director, is ideal for text and simple images, and the second, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0, is well suited for photographs and other graphic images. The scanning workstation is not part of the network, so users must be prepared to save files to a floppy disk, a USB flash drive, or a CD-R or CD-RW disk, all of which can be purchased at the UWM Bookstore. The software, particularly HP Director, is very user-friendly. CP/MF staff are familiar with the basic scanning processes and are able to offer assistance to users if needed.
National History Day Resources from the UWM ArchivesThis year the Archives Department will again participate in the National History Day competition by providing Web-based resources for student research. The theme of this year’s competition is “Communication: The Key to Understanding.” The online curricular resources are arranged into three categories or types of communication: Protest and Activism, Mass Media, and Creative Expression. Each category features images from select archival collections and topics for further research. Featured collections include WTMJ-TV News Film, Father James Groppi, ACT UP Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, and the Little Review. New Geosciences DatabaseThe GeoRef database, established by the American Geological Institute, is now available. This database includes over two million references to journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, and reports in geology and the geosciences. All U.S. Geological Survey publications are included, as well as masters' theses and doctoral dissertations from U.S. and Canadian universities. Coverage for the geology of North America is 1785 to the present and for the geology of the rest of the world from 1933 to the present. For more information, contact the RIS staff. The UWM Libraries will host the UWM Authors Recognition Ceremony on Nov. 11 at 3:30 p.m. honoring those faculty and staff whose published monographs and recordings have been added to the UWM Authors Collection over the past two years. This event has been held every two years since its inception in 1992 and it has become a significant tradition.
