Ortelius Engraving Notecard Reproduction of Abraham Ortelius' "Solis." Notecard Size: 5 x 7 in. Price: Individual card with envelope, $2.00. Packet of six with envelopes, $10.00. Text on Back: " 'Solis.' In: Abraham Ortelius. Deorum dearumque capita, ex antiquis numismatibus Arabahami Ortelii geographi regij colecta, et historica narratione illustrata. Antwep: apud Ioannem Baptistam Vrintium, 1602. Primarily known as a cartographer and publisher of the first modern atlas, Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) also assembled a significant collection of archaeological specimens, including ancient coins, acquired during his extensive travels. In 1573, Ortelius published the first edition of his work, Deorum dearumque capita..., which consisted of a series of engravings of Classical gods and goddesses, as depicted on some of the coins in his collection. Almost of more interest and importance than the portraits themselves, however, are the highly decorative cartouches that surround them. Each one is distinct, presenting an array of examples of Renaissance decorative art. The illustration on this card portrays Sol, the sun, and is one of 59 portraits in the 1602 edition of Ortelius' work. The portrait is accompanied by a Latin text, describing the sun's linage and attributes.
