ArcView Tip E7

Installing the Wisconsin Transverse Mercator (WTM) projection

The "additional" default.prj file needs to be placed into whichever directory ArcView thinks is your HOME directory, as specified in an environment variable. If ArcView doesn't find a HOME environment variable, it will then search for TEMP, CWD and AVHOME in that order. It is necessary to have a modified "projection file" and "header file" - (for Wisconsin) - in the user's ArcView HOME directory.

· Note: The HOME directory in ArcView can be located by

1) opening a View and then

2) selecting from the menu: File / Set Working Directory. (On a typical install, this would be c:\temp.)

· These files, which must be named "default.prj" and "header" are currently available from UWM-AGSC or ESRI.

Note: there is a default.prj file which ships with ArcView and will be in a subdirectory under ESRI. Do not overwrite this file. When ArcView loads, it first sees the system default, and then looks at the home directory. These projection files also contain all of the original projection possibilities, so it is not necessary to remove them from the HOME directory for other users. However, you will notice that on the View Properties menu, the first projection on the list is now Wisconsin. The others are shown below.
