Overview

The AGSL acquires and archives several scale-levels of transportation network data. Scale is an important factor when choosing transportation network data. If your application requires a high level of accuracy, for example overlaying GPS point data over streets, then you should considering using data in a large scale, not a street data created directly from Census TIGER. Another important factor in choosing network data is attributes. For example, you may want to consider if you need governmental boundary information, such as zipcode or census tract, to support geocoding (attaching latitude/longitude coordinates to your data).

NORTAD (CD, web)

  • Title: North American Transportation Atlas CD
  • Description: This CD presents information about transportation facilities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States (each country provided its own geospatial data) for use with geographic information systems software. Transportation facilities represented include public-use highways, rail networks, airports, and water ports. Also included are state or province boundaries. Documentation describes each data set in English, Spanish, and French. The data sets are in DOS and UNIX formats. This CD presents a Windows 95/NT data viewer and converter. Also available for downloading from Bureau of Transporation Statistics website.
  • Coverage: North America (Canada, Mexico, US)
  • Scale: Varies (1:100K-1,000K)
  • Dates: Published 1998
  • Format: Shapefiles
  • Projection: Geographic, decimal degrees projection (NAD83)
  • Access constraints: None

NTAD (CD, web)

  • Title: National Transportation Atlas Database
  • Description: This 2-CD set presents a set of national geographic databases of transportation facilities. These databases include geospatial information for transportation modal networks and intermodal terminals, and related attribute information. Included are descriptions of the file formats and database metadata as prescribed by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC).Also available for downloading from Bureau of Transporation Statistics website.
  • Coverage: US
  • Scale: Varies (1:100K-2,000K)
  • Dates: Published 2002, 2003 and 2004
  • Format: Shapefiles
  • Projection: Geographic, decimal degrees projection (NAD83)
  • Access constraints: None

Dynamap/1000 (web)

  • Title: US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Dynamap 1000 Street Shapefile Download Center Website
  • Description: Originally created by Geographic Data Technology (GDT) Inc., Dynamap/1000 is a vector based, digital, geographic database in which streets and features are represented as line segments. Each side of a street or feature has associated data such as Census codes and Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) codes. The GDT internal street network database contains nearly every street in the nation. The download center is designed to create customized maps and zipped Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shapefiles of GDT street networks. Street data can be downloaded by state/county. Street layers can be downloaded via an Interactive Mapping Download Tool (ESRI's ArcIMS viewer). Metadata for Dynamap/1000 is available.
  • Coverage: US
  • Scale: 1:24,000
  • Dates: 1999
  • Format:Shapefiles
  • Projection:Geographic, decimal degrees projection (NAD83)
  • Access constraints: Please see Geographic Data Technology Inc. 1(800) 331.7881 or email to info@gdt1.com

ADCI/Tele Atlas

  • Title: ADCI/Tele Atlas
  • Description: Obtained from American Digital Cartography, Inc. (ADCI)/Tele Atlas, the Tele Atlas database contains he features and attributes that help drive location related applications. Information included are, for example, geometry, geocoding attributes, routing attributes, points of interests.
  • Coverage: Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Waukesha, Kenosha and Racine counties.
  • Scale: Not specified but probably less than 1:24,000 (guranteed ground accuracy is 5-12 meters)
  • Dates: 2002
  • Format:Shapefiles
  • Projection:Geographic, decimal degrees projection (NAD83)
  • Access constraints: Available to students, faculty, and staff of the UW-Milwaukee for educational purposes

City of Milwaukee Fire DIMEs

  • Title: City of Milwaukee Fire DIMEs
  • Description: Obtained from the City of Milwaukee, this City version of DIME (Dual Independent Map Encoding) file contains a variety of geocoding attributes, such as census tract & blocks, and political boundaries, as well as basic street attributes such as low and high house numbers.
