Overview

Source: Map Milwaukee: Property Data and Interactive Mapping

Local level government, mostly at an assessor's office, maintains property information for tax collection purposes. Its original property information source is the Registry of Deeds (usually at county level) which maintains information on all transfers of real estate. After obtaining updated property ownership and lot information from the Registry of Deeds, the assessor's offices further add updated information on various characteristics of each property to assess its value and support their decisions. Information on properties collected by local government vary, but typically includes geography (address, administrative boundaries, neighborhood), ownership, housing characteristics (size, facilities, type of use) and conditions. Although, for tax assessors, the purpose of the property information collection is to evaluate properties and assign a fair market value to each for tax assessors, the value of this information can go beyond its original purpose and can be used in a variety ways by urban planners, community organizations, and researchers of various disciplines.

MPROP - Milwaukee Property Record Files

Master Property Record, or MPROP as it is commonly called, is a computerized inventory of all properties in the city of Milwaukee. It contains more than 90 elements of data describing each of the approximately 160,000 properties in the city. The file was created in 1975 to provide current and accurate property information with enough flexibility to be accessed in a variety of ways. Since it was implemented and made available, the data has become invaluable and is currently used by nearly every city department. This same data is now being broadly distributed in a format that is compatible with commonly available computer equipment and operating systems. On campus, there are two ways to obtain MPROP files:

  1. From the UWM alpha server - MPROPs are standardized and organized by quarter-section. If you need only a part of MPROP, it is recommended to obtain MPROPs from the UWM alpha server (this excellent instructional document was created by Kurt Meingast of SARUP.).
  2. From the AGSL - the AGSL archives original (not standardized) MPROPs. If you need the entire City's MPROP file, then it is recommended to obtain files from the AGSL - your personal alpha space is probably too small to download a MPROP file for the entire City.

Since 2002, latest MPROP files are also available for downloading via online from the City of Milwaukee's Map Milwaukee website, http://isdweb1.ci.mil.wi.us/RequestServices/PropertyData.html (click "Map Milwaukee" and then click "Download Tabular Data")

 Digital Sanborn Map (Wisconsin; web)
http://www.uwm.edu/Library/ris/databases/#d

The early 20th century's digital Sanborn maps of the state of Wisconsin are available via online for the UWM members. (Go to UWM Libraries database A-Z page and look under the "D" section.) Sanborn maps are large-scale plans containing data that can be used to estimate the potential risk for urban structures. This includes information such as the outline of each building, the size, shape and construction materials, heights, and function of structures, location of windows and doors. The maps also give street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. The AGSL also has paper Sanborn maps of the City of Milwaukee. Inquire for more information about our paper Sanborn collection.
