CTPP - Census Transportation Planning Package

CTPPs are special tabulations designed for transportation analysis. Publicly-available digital CTPP files are only available for 1990 & 2000. Prior to 1990, CTPP was known as "journey-to-work" data and are available for public as a printed format and as a part of census special report series. Check local holding using "census" and "journey-to-work" as a keyword, or ask local governments which might have electronic data tapes. Part 1 data include characteristics of residents similar to census summary files. Part 2 data include characteristics of workers = population characteristics are tabulated by work place not by residential place. Part 3 data include characteristics of commuters and commuting flows. For transportation planners, Part 3 usually gives the most valuable information - however, Part 3 data users should be aware of the fact that some cases for detailed variables might have been suppressed due to too few cases. Available geographic levels vary depending on year and area. For the Milwaukee metropolitan area, the smallest available CTPP geography is census block group.

CTPP Data Sources

1990 & 2000 Bureau of Transportation Statistics (web)
http://www.transtats.bts.gov/
Final CTPP products are available for downloading from the BTS website.

PUMS Electronic Sources at the UW-Milwaukee Libraries (CD) (UWM Libraries)
A variety of electronic resources, which were obtained from the Census Bureau, are available for the in-house use at the UWM Libraries' reference information counter located on the 1st floor. ID card is required to use the CDs. Use PantherCat to identify call number of the data files you need.

CTPP Boundary Data Sources

1990 & 2000 - US Census: Cartographic Boundary Files (web)
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/index.html

1990 & 2000 boundary files available from the US Census Bureau are selected generalized extracts from the Census Bureau's TIGER geographic database and are designed for use in GIS. Available formats are ArcInfo export (e00), shapefiles, and ArcInfo Ungenerate formats.

1990 & 2000 - ESRI: CensusWatch (web)
http://www.esri.com/data/download/census2000_tigerline/
index.html

1990 & 2000 TIGER/Line base boundary and line files are also available from the ESRI website. All files are in shapefile format and available for the entire US. Data are organized by county and referenced to the geographic coordinates, NAD83 (NAD27 for AL and Old Hawaiian Datum for Hawaii).

CTPP Geography

CTPP geography varies depending on year and area. For example, for the Milwaukee metropolitan area, the smallest available geography for 1990 CTPP is TAZ (trafic analysis zone) but for 2000 it is census block group.
