Census 2000

The 2000 Census was the most recent and the most accurate in history, with the lowest undercount of minorities of any previous census. Data are based on the two different types of questionnaires, 100% count (short form) and sample count (long form). Short form questionnaire asks a limited number of questions of every person and housing unit in the US, and long form questionnaire asks additional questions of a sample of persons and housing units (generally 1 in 6 households). Followings are the major data files resulted from the Census 2000 questionnaires.

Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171)
http://www.census.gov/clo/www/redistricting.html

The Census 2000 Redistricting (Public Law 94-171) Data files provide 100% count population data. It also contains counts of Hispanic/Latino persons by race (63 categories) and not Hispanic/Latino persons by race (63 categories) for both the total population and the population 18 years and over. Data are presented for the 50 states and the District of Columbia in a hierarchical sequence down to the block level.

Summary File 1 (SF 1)
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2001/sumfile1.html
Summary File 1 (SF 1) contains 286 detailed tables focusing on age, sex, households, families and housing units. Summary File 1 presents data for the United States, the 50 states and the District of Columbia in a hierarchical sequence down to the block level for many tabulations, but only to the census tract level for others. Summaries are included for other geographic areas such as ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) and Congressional districts.

Summary File 2 (SF 2)
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2001/sumfile2.html
Summary File 2 (SF 2), similar to the SF 1, contains 47 detailed tables focusing on age, sex, households, families and occupied housing units for the total population. Data are provided down to the block level, but no tables are available for geographic areas having population of less than 100. These tables are repeated for 249 detailed population groups

Summary File 3 (SF 3)
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2002/sumfile3.html
Summary File 3 consists of 813 detailed tables of Census 2000 social, economic and housing characteristics compiled from a sample of housing units (about 1 in 6 households) that received the Census 2000 long-form questionnaire. Fifty-one tables are repeated for nine major race and Hispanic or Latino groups. Summary File 3 presents data for the United States, the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in a hierarchical sequence down to the block group for many tabulations, but only to the census tract levels for others. Summaries are included for other geographic areas such as Zip Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAsTM) and Congressional districts (106th Congress).

Summary File 4 (SF 4)
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2003/SF4.html
Summary File 4 (SF4) contains the sample data, similar to the SF 3,  which is the information compiled from the questions asked of a sample of all people and housing units. Data are provided down to the census tract level. The sample data are presented in 323 detailed tables. These tables are repeated for 336 population groups

 2000 Data Sources

American FactFinder (web)
http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en
American Factfinder is your gateway to the Census 2000 & 1990 datasets. Users can select and download data at various geography levels. Search data by "geo within geo" is especially useful, when a user needs to extract data within a particular geographical area - for example, "all census tracts" within the "Milwaukee County". One drawback is that there is a limitation on the amount of data available for downloading. For users who need a bulk amount of data, raw table files are available for downloading from the Census Bureau's FTP site, http://www2.census.gov/census_2000/datasets/

Census 2000 Electronic Resources at the UW-Milwaukee Libraries (CD/DVD) (UWM Libraries)
A variety of electronic resources, which were obtained from the Census Bureau, are available for the in-house use at the UWM Libraries' reference information counter located on the 1st floor. ID card is required to use the CDs/DVDs. Use PantherCat to identify call number of the data files you need.

GeoLytics, Inc. CensusCD 2000 series (CD) (AGS Library)
Created by a private company, GeoLytics, Inc., easy-to-use 2000 data CDs are available at the AGSL for in-house use & the UW-Milwaukee educational use only. It is easy to extract selected Census 2000 data, and data can be exported as shapefiles or MapInfo data format. More information about GeoLytics products can be found at www.geolytics.com/. The AGSL has the following CDs.

  • CensusCD 2000 Redistricting. Available geography: nation, region, division, state, county, tract, block group, MCD/CCD, place, voter districts, MSA/CMSA, PMSA, AIANHH, school districts, congressional district, state legislative districts

 2000 Boundary Data Sources

US Census: Cartographic Boundary Files (web)
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/index.html

The boundary files available from the US Census Bureau are selected generalized extracts from the Census Bureau's TIGER geographic database and are designed for use in GIS. Available formats are ArcInfo export (e00), shapefiles, and ArcInfo Ungenerate formats.

WI DOA: TIGER 2000 Download Files (web)
http://www.doa.state.wi.us/pagesubtext_detail.asp?
linksubcatid=337&linkcatid=217&linkid=7

2000 boundary files for Wisconsin are available for downloading from the state of Wisconsin - Department of Administration. All files are in shapefile format. All shapefiles are referenced to the Wisconsin Transverse Mercator (WTM) coordinate system, with a datum of NAD83(91). The AGSL also archives this dataset.

ESRI: CensusWatch (web)
http://www.esri.com/data/download/census2000_tigerline/
index.html

Census 2000 TIGER/Line base boundary and line files are also available from the ESRI website. All files are in shapefile format and available for the entire US. Data are organized by county and referenced to the geographic coordinates, NAD83 (NAD27 for AL and Old Hawaiian Datum for Hawaii).
