Sign Up for Email Spam Filtering Service
UWM offers campus constituents a service that
scans incoming email to filter out virus and spam
messages. This is a core technology service
available to all UWM faculty, staff and students who
have email delivered to the central UWM email
system (i.e., to “@uwm.edu” email addresses). This
service provides the campus with tools to
significantly reduce the amount of spam and viruses
in email inboxes. Virus scanning and filtering is done
automatically. To use the spam filtering service,
however, you must sign up for it.
To sign up for spam filtering, point your browser to
www.epanther.uwm.edu/email and select “Spam
filtering preferences.” This option requests that spam
addressed to you be automatically stored in a
personal folder named SPAM instead of your inbox.
When you wish, you can look at the messages in
your SPAM folder with PantherMail or any IMAP
email client. Messages will remain in your SPAM
folder for a minimum of four weeks. Once each
week, SPAM messages more than four weeks old
will be automatically deleted from your SPAM folder.
Space used by the SPAM folder will not count
against your email storage quota.
For more information on this service, please see
www.imt.uwm.edu/Info/email-scan-filter.html.
Why am I getting all this spam?
The Center for Democracy and Technology has
released a report that includes information on the
source of spam and some sound advice on how to
avoid it. The complete report is on the Web at www.cdt.org/speech/spam/030319spamreport.shtml.
