Technical Requirements

All Certificate courses are offered online through Web-based distance education. To be successful in an online (distance education) course you must be familiar with the basic operation of your computer hardware and software. The fundamental skills you need include word processing, sending and receiving email, attaching documents to emails, and browsing the Web.

Enroll in the Graduate Certificate Program in Professional Writing and Communication if:

  • You are a self-directed, self-motivated, independent learner who will ask for help from the instructor when necessary.
  • You have basic computer experience and competence with word processing, email, and browsing the Web.
  • You have regular access to the computer you will use to connect to the course for the entire semester.
  • You know how to send, receive, and attach documents to emails.
  • You can download files to your hard drive.
  • Your computer hardware and software meet the minimum requirements (see below).

If you meet all the requirements, you might be well suited to enroll in the Graduate Certificate Program in Professional Writing and Communication.

Computer Hardware/ Software Requirements
You need to meet the following computer hardware and software requirements to successfully participate in the Certificate courses:

  • Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP with Pentium 133 Mhz or faster, 32 MB RAM or more, 28.8 kbps modem or faster (optimum: broadband Internet connection)
  • Established Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or UWM account
  • Established email account with an active and accurate email address; minimum document attachment size of 5 MB should be possible
  • Internet browser software (Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x or Netscape Navigator 4.x)
  • Software: PowerPoint and Word processor (MS Word, Word Perfect)
  • Software: RealPlayer and Acrobat Reader (Download free from the Web)
  • Sound card and speakers (or headphones)
  • CD-ROM drive (40x) and printer
  • Flat bed scanner (optional)
