NOTICE FOR ALL SANDBURG RESIDENTS

The UW-Milwaukee Police Department has taken numerous thefts of items left inside dorm rooms. Many of these thefts occur because doors were left unlocked and items were not secured properly inside of rooms. Items such as video games, laptops, I-pods, DVD's, software, computer games, textbooks, and cash are a few of the highly targeted items.

In order to reduce the possibility of your things being stolen, be sure to keep you doors locked at all times. In many cases the suspects enter rooms that were unlocked and the resident was, “Only gone for a few minutes.” It only takes seconds for a suspect to walk in, put your items in a backpack, and walk out. Placing a laptop lock and cable on your computer will help reduce the chances of it being stolen. Do not leave valuable items out in the open where someone will be able to see them and easily take them in a short amount of time.

In the unfortunate event that some of your property is stolen, it makes reporting the incident much easier and increases your chances of recovering your property slightly higher if you take inventory of all your valuable items. Record their serial numbers, brand, make, model numbers, and the cost of the items. Keep these records in a safe place that can be provided to police in the event something is taken. Also, check with your parent's homeowners/renters insurance to see if any of your property is covered while you are away at school. If it is not, check to see if you are able to get renter's insurance on your property while you are away at school. It is very inexpensive to get renter's insurance, and will save you a lot of money if you end up having to replace expensive items.

The UW-Milwaukee Police Department would like to remind all dorm residents to keep their suite/dorms rooms locked and keep all property secured.

Please report any suspicious persons and activity to the UW-Milwaukee Police Department at 229-4627 . If you believe it is an emergency please dial 9911.
