BOOZE AND BELTS PROGRAM
To keep this joyous season from becoming a time of tragedy for families, the UWM Police Department is partnering up with the Wisconsin Sate Patrol and many other local law enforcement agencies to participate in the “Booze and Belts” program. This program is a Law Enforcement Program designed to provide a high level of enforcement for OWI, Operating While Intoxicating, and seatbelt violations.
The over all goal of this program is to save lives and prevent injuries- not to write more citations. With the success of the “Click it or Ticket” program and the “Over the Limit Under Arrest” program, the UWM Police Department is proud to be participating in this new Department of Transportation program.
Because of these programs Wisconsin is on pace to end the year with the fewest annual traffic deaths in this century. Traffic accidents have killed more than 99 teenagers this year already, and nationwide traffic accidents are the number one cause of death for young people. In 2006, alcohol-related crashes killed 305 people and injured nearly 6,000.
Consistent safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect people from being ejected from a vehicle or thrown around violently inside it during a crash. Approximately 77 percent of passenger vehicle occupants in serious crashes have survived when buckled up.
Because of these statistics the UWM Police Department is proud to participate in the “Booze and Belts” program. The program will run from December 10-16, 2007.
