Doctoral Program in Medical Informatics

Medical Informatics PhD Program

The PhD Program in Medical Informatics is an interdisciplinary program that is the result of collaboration between the Medical College of Wisconsin and several academic units at UWM. The program was established in 2005 under the leadership of the two founding Co-Directors of the program: Dr. Charles Kahn (Radiology, MCW) and Dr. K. Vairavan (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, UWM). The program is housed in the College of Engineering and Applied Science and is guided by a Steering Committee consisting of faculty from the following participating units:

  • Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW)
  • College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS)
  • College of Health Sciences (CHS)
  • College of Nursing (NUR)
  • Lubar School of Business (LSB)
  • School of Information Studies (SOIS)

The current program Co-Directors are Dr. Charles Kahn (MCW) and Dr. Susan McRoy (Computer Science, UWM).

Medical Informatics is a field that combines medical science and information technology. Students in this doctoral program train to become future leaders in the use of information systems in healthcare delivery, research and education. A unique feature of this program is its interdisciplinary approach. The program combines the collective strengths of the participating academic units to offer advanced training that integrates clinical and administrative applications of information technology in medicine and health care.

The program curriculum includes core course work in human pathophysiology, medical informatics, databases and medical ethics. The program offers the following four tracks for specialization:

  • Knowledge Based Systems
  • Health Services Management and Policy
  • Health Information Systems
  • Medical Imaging and Instrumentation

The program has attracted both full-time students and part-time students who work in  health care organizations and industry. Part-time students bring valuable work experience and insights that have enriched the program.
