Abstract: This paper develops a measure of structural change of a country's exports, and applies it to East Asian countries. The results suggest that: (1) sizeable changes in the structural patterns of developing East Asian trade have occurred over the past decade; (2) the manufacturing sector has been restructured at a faster pace than primary commodities; (3) in general, intra-regional trade has been changing more rapidly than global trade; and (4) ASEAN development consists largely of upgrading industrial structure as against expansion of traditional exports.
