Abstract: This study, based on a social accounting framework, investigates quantitative effects of the choice of foreign trade regime on domestic employment and the distribution of income for Bangladesh. Among the three broad categories of trade regime--export promotion, import substitution, or non-tradable sector expansion--agricultural and agroindustry-based exports are shown to have the largest income and employment effects through interindustry linkages. Import substitution in manufacturing industries, particularly in those with heavy import requirements, provides limited potentials for employment and income generation. The strategy choice does nto discernibly change the distribution of income, although it differently affects the incomes of the poor.
