Abstract: Within a quarter century, Korea transformed itself from a typical backward economy into one of the so-called NICs. This paper overviews the development mechanism of Korean economy since the early 1960s, examines the NICs phenomenon, and deduces possible lessons for other developing countries that might be willing to emulate the Korean experience in some way.
