Research
The Field Station has been used by researchers and instructors from various
disciplines such as plant and animal ecology, evolutionary biology, ethology,
taxonomy, geology, and climatology. Research at the Station has produced 190
scientific publications and 111 dissertations and theses since 1970. In a
typical year there are about 40 research projects in progress. These projects
span a very wide range of topics and are conducted by researchers from a
large number of institutions. Research and class use is on a year-round basis
and the Station's staff can provide support for research which requires
frequent monitoring.
A wide variety of long-term data bases are available for the Field Station's
research areas. These include vascular plant and vertebrate species lists for
the entire area, lists of bryophytes and fungi for selected areas, and lists
of selected taxa of invertebrates. Long-term weather records for the past 30
years are available; these are in an easily-accessible digital format since
1989. We maintain 30 years of records on breeding bird populations and
banding data for migrants. Several sites including the Cedarburg Bog and the
beech-maple woods have quantitative baseline data on the composition of
vegetation. A complete map of all trees and diameter measurements in a 2.25
ha area of the beech-maple forest was made in 1987. Many other datasets area
available for specific locations and communities. We are developing a
geographic information system (GIS) map for the Field Station, and some base
layers in ArcView format are available. Contact the Director or Manager for
more information.
The Field Station Bulletin publishes
articles on topics in the biological and physical sciences, especially those
focusing on the natural history of southeastern Wisconsin and the Field Station area. This
publication may be obtained, free of charge, by contacting the Field Station.
The Field Station hosts the Wisconsin
Herpetology Homepage, an information resource on the reptiles and
amphibians of Wisconsin.
