Lou Nelson, Maintenance and Research Support Office: UWM Field Station Phone: (262) 675-6844 email: nelsonl@uwm.edu Lou Nelson has been with the Field Station since 1987. Lou is responsible for maintenance of the grounds and buildings, and he also provides technical support for most of the research projects at the Field Station. Lou has an impressive set of skills: he is an accomplished welder, metalworker, and mechanic, and a proficient plumber and electrician. He is also an excellent carpenter and woodworker, and has expertise in concrete work, fencing, gardening, control of exotic plants, and management of natural areas. Lou has a talent for solving technical problems and for inventing all kinds of equipment and devices that are needed to make field research possible or more efficient. Lou has invented and built hundreds of items, from the very simple to the complex, to support field research and operation of the Field Station. Lou has played a crucial role in many Field Station projects, too numerous to list here. Major projects that he has recently contributed to include reconstructing the entrances at the Neda Mine Bat Hibernaculum, instrumenting the mine for environmental and bat activity monitoring, upgrading the weather station and expanding phenological monitoring at the Station, reconstructing the boardwalk in the Cedarburg Bog, designing and constructing nest boxes, predator guards,and an aviary to support bird research, and constructing and maintaining experimental gardens. In recognition of Lou's exceptional contributions to the Field Station programs, he was awarded a UWM Classified Staff Outstanding Service Award in 2000. |
