Neighborhood Survey

Seventy students of ARCH-302, Fall 2000, interviewed 400 people, including both residents in the neighborhood and students of UWM, in order to identify solutions for improvement of the physical quality of the neighborhood. Seven groups of students (10 students in each group) surveyed the following streets (2900 and 3000 blocks only): Stowell Ave, Prospect Ave, Farwell Ave, Maryland Ave, Frederick Ave, Murray Ave, Cramer Ave.

The Neighborhood Survey was done in 4 phases:

  • Phase I: Observations by students under the guidance of CDS Unit to get familiar with the problems of the area.
  • Phase II: Questionnaire/survey of residents and UWM students.
  • Phase III: Literature review/ precedents study
  • Phase IV: Development of solutions based on the questionnaire findings

Students and residents think the relationship between their groups is satisfactory. Both groups think that the majority of students behave well. They also agree that there should be off-campus housing. One resident responded:

"It is good for people in all phases of life to interact because it teaches students responsibilities and all the residents tolerance."

Both groups think that parties should end at 10 PM in order to provide for both groups' needs and to minimize neighborhood disturbances.
