Undergraduate Students:
Meta Steinfort Scholarship
Each year the Department of Spanish and Portuguese awards the Meta Steinfort Scholarship in the amount of $300. The Scholarship is to be offered to a junior or senior of high academic standing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who is majoring in Spanish, either in the College of Letters and Science or in the School of Education. Students planning to pursue a professional career in teaching are specially considered for this award. Candidates are nominated by the faculty and teaching staff of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and nominees are invited to submit a formal application to the Spanish and Portuguese Scholarship Committee. This Committee selects one awardee. Nominees for the Meta Steinfort Scholarship may also apply for other Departmental awards, such as the Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarships (below).
The Scholarship has been made possible by a provision in the will of Meta Mary Steinfort, Emeritus Professor of Spanish at the Milwaukee Extension of the University of Wisconsin, one of the predecessor institutions of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Scholarships
Thanks to a generous bequest from an anonymous donor, the Department awards scholarships of $1000 to two successful applicants each academic year. In order to be considered for an Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship applicants must (1) be Spanish majors at UWM; (2) have a total University GPA of 3.5 or higher; (3) have taken at least two 300-level (or higher) courses in Spanish and/or Portuguese at UWM.
To complete the application process, all applicants must: (1) fill out and submit an application form (available at the Spanish and Portuguese Main Office, Curtin 733); (2) submit 1-2 letters of recommendation (sent separately) from instructors in Spanish and Portuguese at UWM; (3) write and submit a two-page, typed, and double-spaced essay in Spanish (essay topic provided on application form); (4) provide an unofficial copy of undergraduate transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
In addition, the Scholarship Committee may decide to request an interview with the applicants.
The recipients of these scholarships must remain Spanish majors and must be enrolled in Spanish classes at UWM (including UWM-sponsored study abroad) during the award period. The scholarships are not renewable, and recipients may not reapply for the scholarships.
Announcements and further details regarding these scholarships are posted each year, several weeks before the application deadline.
Donald R. Shea Undergraduate Scholarship in Latin American and Caribbean Studies

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese, once or twice a year, initiates outstanding students into Sigma Delta Pi, a national honor society dedicated to fostering the dissemination of Hispanic culture.
