The UWM sociology department offers a variety of types of undergraduate classes. Introductory courses, or 100-level courses, offer an overview of the field of sociology, and are accessible to all students. Courses at the 200-level are generally open to students with at least sophomore standing, or those who have taken a 100-level course, and focus on particular subfields of sociology, such as sociology of work, social inequality, and sexuality. Upper-division undergraduate courses are intended for juniors and seniors who have taken an introductory-level course, and guide students in a more intensive, in-depth analysis of the subject matter. Seminars are small classes that encourage a lot of student participation. An internship arranges for students to be placed in "real-world" settings as a form of service-learning, which many students appreciate. Finally, a student may engage in an independent study course under the supervision of a cooperating instructor.
