Directions for Ph.D. Candidates & Escorts
RSVP Please let us know if you will be attending the ceremony and who will be your faculty escort. Complete the on-line PhD RSVP Form Assembly and Seating Diagram will be posted by November 28, 2008. Staging Area - Dress Rehearsal Please report to the U.S. Cellular Arena, no later than 12:55pm. There will be a dress rehearsal for Ph.D. candidates and their escorts that starts promptly at 1:00pm. The main entrance to the Arena is at 400 W. Kilbourn Ave. However, please enter the Arena through the rear northwest entrance labeled "Stage Door," next to the loading dock at 501 W. State Street (off State Street between 4th and 6th Streets). Proceed down the ramp, then go to the Ph.D. assembly area. Signs are posted and marshals will be present to direct you. Candidates will receive a pre-printed name card which will be read dur ing the ceremony. The name reader will be the Dean of the Graduate School. Processional Candidates and escorts will process into the arena in a column of two's in department order and alphabetically by candidate's name (same order as the program). The escort will carry the candidate' s hood. Marshals will be present to assist and will lead the candidates to the first few rows on the left side of the arena as you face the stage (west side). Name labels will be on chairs for each candid ate and escort. Ceremony Ph.D. candidates will be asked to rise for conferring their degree. The candidate and escort approach the stage from their left (stage right), with the escort on the candidate's left. The escort will hand the Dean of the Graduate School the candidate's name card which will be read. The candidate and the escort will then move to the center of the stage. The candidate will turn and face the audience. The escort will hood the candidate. Then the Provost presents the diploma. The Chancellor shakes hands with the degree recipient. The candidate and escort leave the stage via the center stairway, return to their seats and sit down. The Dean reads the name of the second candidate and escort - and so on until all candidates have gone through the ceremony.
