THE UNIVERSITY The University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee is the metropolitan campus of the University of
Wisconsin system. The 90-acre campus is located in a residential neighborhood
on Milwaukee's north-east side near Lake Michigan. UWM was formed as
a university in 1956 and, through a multi-million dollar effort, has
kept pace with the growth of its student body, which now numbers more
than 27,000, including 4,200 graduate students. THE HELEN BADER SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WELFARE The Helen Bader
School of Social Welfare is an interdisciplinary School encouraging
cooperative work by professionals from a variety of disciplines. The
School offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in social work
and criminal justice. Programs emphasize the integration of knowledge,
theory, research, and practice. A favorable student faculty ration permits
students to work closely with faculty on a collaborative basis. Good
relationships with the practice community insure that students are able
to relate what they are learning in the classroom to professional practice.
The School offers excellent facilities, including a microcomputer lab
and a suite of interviewing rooms equipped with videotaping equipment
and one-way mirrors. THE MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK DEGREE The Master of Social
Work (MSW) degree program prepares students for advanced professional
practice in a variety of areas including marriage and family therapy,
mental health, corrections, gerontology, drug and alcohol abuse, and
school social work. Particular emphasis throughout the program is given
to the special problems of racism and sexism. A wide range of field
placement agencies is available in addition to classroom courses on
specialized and advanced topics. The minimum degree requirement is 29
credits (three semesters); students lacking undergraduate social work
preparation must complete an additional semester of foundation courses.
The MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. THE MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY CERTIFICATE MSW students who wish to develop advanced competence in marriage and family therapy, and eventually become state (LMFT) licensed in Wisconsin as Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Members of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), may also apply for the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) certificate program. The MSW/MFT program consists of a special sequence of courses designed to meet the educational requirements for both the MSW degree, state licensure as LMFT, and associate membership in AAMFT.
Students enroll in field practicum concurrently with their coursework for at least three semesters. Family placements are available in a wide variety of well-established community agencies. THE FACULTY The strength of
a graduate program is built upon the competence of its faculty and their
contribution to the field. The School's faculty members are committed
to teaching, and contributing to the profession through their efforts
in research, community service, and professional practice. Currently,
faculty members are engaged in research in the areas of drug and alcohol
abuse, clinical interviewing, gerontology, clinical evaluation, human
sexuality, family systems, parenting, mental illness, community family
practice, and child abuse and neglect. Faculty contribute regularly
to the major social work and marriage and family therapy journals.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Financial aid opportunities are available through the UWM Graduate School Fellowship Competition and the Advanced Opportunity Program. In addition, a limited number of assistantships are available within the school. APPLICATION AND INFORMATION For further information on the MFT Certificate please call or write: Chair
