Arthur and Irene Burckel Scholarship
DR. NICHOLAS BURCKEL CONTINUES HIS PASSIONATE SUPPORT OF LIBRARY & INFORMATION STUDIES
SOIS is thrilled to announce the formation of the Arthur and Irene Burckel Scholarship Fund. Thanks to Dr. Nicholas Burckel and his generous gift of $40,000, the fund will provide scholarships to SOIS graduate students based on financial need. Beginning in 2008, students will be able to apply for a $1,000 scholarship from the fund towards their MLIS program.
The establishment of this fund illustrates Dr. Burckel’s consistent and passionate support of library and information studies over the past several decades. Dr. Burckel received his Master of Library Science degree from SOIS in 1983. He went on to become the Dean of Libraries at Marquette University in 1995 where he worked for more than ten years; he retired from his position in 2007. Dr. Burckel was the eighth Dean of Libraries at Marquette. He established the scholarship in fall 2007 in honor of his parents.
Thank you Dr. Burckel for your service to librarianship and for your continued service to library and information studies by supporting future generations of LIS professionals.
$4,000 Pledge for SOIS Graduate Students
SCHOLARSHIP TO BE ESTABLISHED TO THANK TWO HIGHLY REGARDED FACULTY
This fall, an anonymous donor pledged $4,000 ($1,000 per year) to fund one graduate student’s studies in SOIS. This generous individual wanted to establish the "Dimitroff/Walker" scholarship for full-time or part-time graduate students as a way of saying thank you to two professors who had a powerful impact on her: Dr. Alexandra Dimitroff and Dr. Tom Walker.
“What a wonderful compliment and gift!” said Barbara Monroe, Development Director for the Schools of Education and Information Studies at UWM. Barbara coordinated the gift with the donor.
