Dr. Mohammed Aman, Professor and former Dean of SOIS, Delivers Keynote Address at 14th Annual Special Libraries Association Conference - Gulf States Chapter

Dr. Mohammed AmanDr. Mohammed Aman, Professor and former Dean of the School of Information Studies was the keynote speaker at the 14th annual Special Libraries Association Conference-Gulf States Chapter, held in Doha, Qatar in April, 2008. The theme of the conference was “Achieving Quality in Libraries & Information Services: Building a Culture of Continuous Improvement in Arabian Gulf Universities”

Prior to the SLA-AGC Conference, Dr. Aman lectured at Qatar University (QU) and participated in the annual Academic Forum sponsored by QU Department of Mass Communication and Information Sciences earlier in April. During his visit, he also met with many SOIS alumni from the Arab Gulf States and discussed future cooperation with deans and professors from Gulf State Universities who attended the SLA conference. He interviewed a number of librarians and information specialists who are in the process of receiving government scholarships to pursue graduate degrees in the US, and a number of faculty who plan to spend their sabbaticals at UWM under his supervision and guidance. While there, Dr. Aman was also presented with a special award, the Seal of Qatar University in appreciation of his contributions to QU.

Dr. Aman, along with another Keynote speaker, Dr. Paul Rich, President of the Policy Studies Organization, and Professor at Stanford University, met with the Sheikha Dr. Bint Abdulla al-Misnad, president of QU, the Vice President for Research, and a number of deans and directors. Dr. Aman gave lectures at QU on “The Role of Library & Information Science Education in National Development,” and another lecture to QU faculty on  “Publishing and Electronic Publishing” in his capacity as the Editor of the Digest of Middle East Studies (DOMES).

In his keynote address at the SLA Conference, Dr. Aman discussed the evaluation of library and information services. He also chaired a research panel “New Approaches and Methodologies in Performance measurement.” More than 350 special librarians and information professionals from the Gulf States and other Arab countries like Jordan and Egypt attended the conference, which was sponsored by the National Council for Culture, Arts & Heritage, Chaired by H.E. Sheikh Mashael Bin Jassem Al Thani, and Qatar University, Sheikha Bint Abdulla al-Misnad, President. At the closing banquet of the SLA-AGC, Professor Aman received a special recognition award from the SLA-AGC
