Library Media Specialist Certification

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a complete program to attain certification from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a school library media specialist. In the state of Wisconsin, this program requires that the student has, or is eligible for, a classroom teaching license in another field before application for the Initial Library Media License (902) can be made. The MLIS degree is required when the candidate applies for the second level of the certification, the Professional 902 License, no later than 5 years after the Initial license begins.

In addition to the coursework outlined below, all certification candidates will be required to maintain an ePortfolio which demonstrates their proficiency in the Content Standards for Initial Licensure. These standards are listed at DPI webpage [http://dpi.wi.gov/imt/lmslic.html] and are available from the school library media program coordinator. General ePortfolio information may also be found through the UWM School of Education. http://www.soe.uwm.edu/pages/welcome/PI_34

Students wishing to focus on school library media certification during their MLIS program should, after discussing their intention with the school library media program coordinator:

  • Apply to the UWM Graduate School
  • Apply to the SOIS Graduate Program
  • Apply to the certification program

Students who currently hold a 901 license and are completing coursework for the 902 will be asked to prepare a modified portfolio as they complete their required courses.

More information about application to the certification program may be obtained from the School Library Media Coordinator, Bonnie Withers, bwithers@sois.uwm.edu.
