Remote Proctoring of the SOIS Comprehensive Examination Policy and Procedure
Approved by SOIS Faculty on April 19, 2002; revised January 31, 2003

| Exam Schedule | Comps FAQs | Thesis Option |

Remote proctoring of the Comprehensive Examination is available to those students who (1) have taken less than half of their coursework on campus and (2) live beyond a 250-mile driving distance from the city of Milwaukee or for whom transportation to Milwaukee would pose an undue hardship. Regardless of the opportunity to take the Comprehensive Examination by remote proctoring, the SOIS faculty urge distance students to consider traveling to Milwaukee to take the in-house portion of the Comprehensive Examination, as the SOIS faculty believe this will result in a more rounded educational experience.

However, subject to the conditions below, a remotely proctored Comprehensive Examination is offered to distance students.

  • A student desiring to take the in-house portion of the Comprehensive Examination through the use of a Remote Proctor is responsible for all external costs associated with the administration of the remotely proctored Comprehensive Examination. This may include but is not limited to costs for overnight or express mail delivery or fax service from the remote proctor to SOIS-UWM and any fees charged by the remote proctor for administration of the examination.
  • The student must initiate contact with the Remote Proctor and establish the remote proctor's willingness to serve in this capacity. The Remote Proctor should then contact the Comprehensive Examination Committee on behalf of the student and express in writing willingness to serve as Remote Proctor at least 30 calendar days before the take-home questions are distributed. As part of this process the Remote Proctor should identify and describe the specific conditions under which it anticipates the proctoring will occur that will meet the requirements of this policy, i.e., the identity of the bona fide Remote Proctor (see below), the date, time, and place of the remotely proctored examination, its ability to ensure delivery of the remotely proctored examination to SOIS-UWM as soon as possible after the administration of the Comprehensive Examination, etc. This should be done as soon as possible after the start of the academic semester in which the student desires to take the comprehensive examination.
  • The Comprehensive Examination Committee or its Chair acting on its behalf will make a determination as to whether the remote proctor and the conditions under which it intends to administer the Comprehensive Examination, subject to the requirements of the Remote Proctoring of the SOIS Comprehensive Examination Policy and Procedure, are acceptable.
  • Only the following entities can serve as a bona fide remote proctor: either the official testing center of an accredited educational institution, an official testing center of a governmental agency, such as a city employment relations department or similar personnel or benefits unit, or a private educational agency that is certified to administer the GRE, the MAT, or the TOEFL. For example, an individually administered Comprehensive Examination by a faculty member at another university in his or her office would NOT qualify as a bona fide Remote Proctor.
  • The administration of the Comprehensive Examination by the Remote Proctor must occur on the same date as the in-house portion of the Comprehensive Examination is administered to students in Milwaukee.
  • Immediately after the remote student has taken the comprehensive examination, the Remote Proctor shall arrange for the exam, the student's answers and any scratch paper used by the student to be delivered to SOIS by the use of overnight or express mail, courier delivery, or similar method. It is imperative that this delivery process be initiated as soon as possible after the completion of the examination and with a reliable entity as grading of the comprehensive examination cannot begin until all examinations are accounted for and in the possession of SOIS, the Comprehensive Examination Committee or its agents.
  • All other requirements regarding the circumstances under which the comprehensive examination is offered must be followed by the remote proctor, i.e., time limit, closed book, use of pen, no pencil, use of designated test-books or bluebooks, etc.
