For questions regarding the Comprehensive Exam, please contact: Ms. Linda Barajas barajas@sois.uwm.edu
The Comprehensive Examination is comprised of
two parts:
- the take-home question and
- the three questions answered during the three
hour onsite examination session.
The four major areas covered in the complete
examination are:
A) Information Sources and Services;
B) Information Organization;
C) Information Theories and Technologies; and
D) Management
Questions typically not only require that the
student present information learned in SOIS courses,
but that the student should present specific viewpoints,
attitudes, and decisions which are based upon
current professional thought.
Copies of selected SOIS Comprehensive Examinations
are on electronic reserve in the UWM Library.
Students may take the exam in either fall or spring
semester. Students may take the examination anytime
after they have met BOTH of the following criteria:
- you have twelve or fewer credit hours remaining
in your MLIS program; and
- if you were admitted with a deficiency, the
deficiency has been cleared.
Students choosing the comprehensive examination option must successfully pass a written comprehensive examination. A student who fails the examination the first time may repeat it once. However, a student who fails the examination may not select the thesis option.
More information on the Comprehensive Examination
will be made available at the orientation sessions
held each semester.
STUDY SUGGESTIONS
Copies of actual examinations from the past several years and a sample of passing answers from a previous comprehensive examination are on e-reserve in the Golda Meir Library.
