Description:

Awarded to incoming MLIS students

Eligibility Criteria:

Academic merit based on undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate performance

Application Procedure:

None. All incoming students admitted to the MLIS program are considered.

Stipulations:

Recipients must be registered for at least six graduate credits per semester during the two academic year semesters of the award (fall-spring for fall awardees; spring-fall for spring awardees).


Alexandra Dimitroff/Thomas Walker Scholarship Fund | top |

Description:

Thanks to the generosity of a SOIS alumna, this scholarship supports library education and honors two faculty of the School of Information Studies, Alexandra Dimitroff and Thomas Walker. The scholarship is awarded to full or part-time graduate students interested in a career in public libraries with a preference for those intending to specialize in services for children and young adults.

Eligibility Criteria:

Full or part-time graduate status, with at least 18 credits toward the MLIS degree.

Application Procedure:

Applicants submit a letter to the Chair of the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee substantiating their interest in the scholarship and an essay of no more than 500 words, expressing their intent to pursue a career in public librarianship or services for children and young adults.

Stipulations:

Recipients must be registered for a minimum of at least four graduate credits per fall semester during the academic year of the award.


Ted Samore Scholarship Fund | top |

Description:

Named in honor of Professor Theodore (Ted) Samore, who retired at the conclusion of the 1989-90 academic year after 24 years of dedicated service in the field of Library Science. Samore, who set a high bar for research in the field of Library Science, was known for his commitment to students as a teacher and mentor. This scholarship is awarded to an MLIS student based on academic merit and outstanding student achievement or promise.

Application Procedure:

Applicants submit a letter to the Chair of the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee substantiating their interest in the scholarship and an essay of no more than 500 words, describing their academic achievements.

Description:

The University of Wisconsin -- Milwaukee School of Information Studies is inviting applicants for the Timothy L. Ericson Scholarship in Archival Studies, to be awarded for the Fall of 2008.  The Timothy L. Ericson Scholarship in Archival Studies honors the founder and long-time Director of the SOIS Archival Studies Program, Timothy L. Ericson, whose contributions to SOIS have supported his colleagues, inspired his students and brought many new and talented individuals to the archives profession.

Eligibility Criteria:

Both On-site and Distance Education students may apply.

As of Fall semester of each year, students must be enrolled in the School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.  Students must either be enrolled in the MLIS Program with a Concentration in Archival Studies, or show a demonstrated commitment to Archival Studies, or must be enrolled in the Certificate of Advanced Study in Archives and Records Management (CAS) Program.

Application Procedure:

 Students must provide the following:

1. Name and contact information, on a cover sheet separate from the application materials.

2. A description of the coursework that they have completed in the MLIS or CAS program, with a focus on Archives coursework.

3. A personal statement of no more than two pages, expressing their interest and accomplishments in the area of Archival Studies, the coursework they intend to complete, and their professional goals upon completion of the program.

The Initial Selection Committee will consist of the Director of the Archival Studies Program, one member of the archival community who is a graduate of the SOIS Archival Studies Program, and one additional member of the SOIS faculty.  Final recommendation for the award will be approved by the SOIS Admissions and Awards Committee.

Description:

Awarded to an entering or continuing MLIS student with an expressed interest in information technology or library automation

Eligibility Criteria:

Academic merit based on undergraduate (minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA) and (if applicable) graduate performance (minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA).

Application Procedure:

Applicants submit a letter to the Chair of the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee stating their interest in the scholarship. The application must also include a 500-word or less essay on one aspect of the role of information technology in the information professions.

Stipulations:

Recipients must be registered for at least six graduate credits per semester during the academic year of the award.



Doralyn Hickey Memorial Scholarship | top |

Description:

This scholarship is named in honor of Prof. Doralyn Hickey, who served as director of the School in the mid-1970s. The scholarship is awarded to an entering or continuing MLIS student who is dedicated to a professional career in a facet of information organization (for example, cataloging, classification, indexing, metadata).

Eligibility Criteria:

Entering or continuing MLIS student with an expressed interest in the area of information organization.

Application Procedure:

Applicants submit a letter to the Chair of the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee stating their interest in the scholarship. The application must also include a 500-word or less essay outlining their commitment to the area of information organization.

Stipulations:

Recipients must be registered for at least six graduate credits per semester during the academic year of the award.


Barbara G. Bartley Award (Biennial)| top |

Description:

This scholarship is named after Barbara G. Bartley, Associate Professor Emerita, to support attendance at the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) national conference. This award is given to a current MLIS student or a recent graduate of the UWM SOIS. Eligibility is based on interest in children/young adult librarianship and academic achievement.

Application Procedure: Applicants submit a letter to the Chair of the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee stating their interest in the scholarship. The application must also include a 500-word or less essay outlining their interests in children/young adult librarianship.

Description:

The SOIS Alumni Association awards this scholarship to a full-time graduate student based on academic achievement.

Application Procedure: Applicants submit a letter to the Chair of the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee stating their interest in the scholarship. The application must also include a 500-word or less essay outlining their academic achievements.

Stipulations:

Recipients must be registered for at least eight graduate credits per semester during the academic year of the award.

Description:

The North Shore Milwaukee Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has established this scholarship in the memory of Elizabeth Mason, Alumna and Adjunct Faculty member of SOIS. It is awarded to a female MLIS student based upon academic achievement. Preference will be given to a student living in the Milwaukee North Shore area.

Application Procedure: Applicants submit a letter to the Chair of the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee stating their interest in the scholarship. The application must also include a 500-word or less essay outlining their academic achievements.

WLA Vida Cummins Stanton Scholarship (Administered by the Wisconsin Library Association) | top |

A Wisconsin resident.
Admitted to the Master's degree program in the School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a part-time or full-time student.
