Admissions-
Graduate
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor's degree from an approved institution
and an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 (4.0
basis) are basic requirements of the Graduate
School. A student whose undergraduate GPA is below
2.75 may be admitted on probation if the applicant
can furnish substantial evidence of capacity to
do satisfactory graduate work. Such evidence might
be proof of high quality performance in postgraduate
work or a high score on the Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT).
International applicants who do not hold a degree
from an English language institution obtained
in the past 2 years or whose native language is
not English are required to submit the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score or
the International English Language Testing System
(IELTS) score. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score
is 550 for the paper based test and 213 if taken
by computer and a minimum acceptable score for
the IELTS is 6.5. International applicants must
also complete the GRE or MAT if the applicant's
undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) is less
than 3.00.
An applicant must meet Graduate School Requirements
plus the following additional requirements of
the School of Information Studies to be considered
for admission to the program:
- Satisfactory scores on the Miller Analogies
Test (MAT) or Verbal and Quantitative Aptitude
portions of the Graduate Record Examination
(GRE). Applicants whose overall GPA as calculated
by the UWM Graduate School is at least 3.0
or who posses a graduate degree are exempted
from this requirement. See
GRE/MAT Info.
- Two letters of recommendation from persons
who can testify to the applicant's likelihood
of success in the master's program in Library
and Information Science. References from former
teachers or employers are preferred. Download
recommendation form (PDF format).
Non-U.S. applicants should request
application forms and other pertinent information
from the School of Information Studies (SOIS)
and from the Office
of International Studies & Programs. International
students should include a brief resume of their
previous educational experience, including last
degree or certificate received as well as the
results of the TOEFL exam. International students
whose command of the English language is not sufficient
for beginning graduate study in SOIS may be able
to take advantage of UWM's English as a Second
Language (ESL) Program. ESL can be a full-time
program preceding MLIS studies, or it can be a
part-time program during the first semester of
the Master's program in Library and Information
Science.
* Please note the English
deficiency removal requirements by the graduate
school. Please see the Graduate
Student and Faculty Handbook for details.
