BSIR
- Distance Learning Opportunities
The School of Information Studies (SOIS) has
been providing distance education courses throughout
the state of Wisconsin for many years. With the
new Web-based coursework, SOIS is expanding the
range of its distance education courses beyond
these boundaries.
The delivery of coursework over the Internet
enables professionals and students from remote
locations to participate in the program. Distance
learning fosters unique opportunities for students,
creating truly student-centered environments.
Students who otherwise could not complete the
program in Milwaukee are now given the opportunity.
The SOIS approach to distance education involves
a user-friendly software package and delivery
over the Internet. The technical requirements
are minimal. Most of the coursework is completed
"asynchronously," in non-real time,
so students can participate at their convenience.
Real-time chats and some "face-to-face"
video meetings may be required, depending on the
course. The program's integrity is preserved with
careful monitoring and pacing of students, as
well as with the guidance of a Distance Education
coordinator.
The School of Information Studies offers a select
number of courses from the IR major in a Web-based
format in connection with the UW College Connection.
Web-based instruction allows for an entire course
to be completed online in a robust, interactive
environment without having to visit UWM. Assignments,
presentations, quizzes, and exams are delivered
via the course website using a popular e-learning
courseware and a combination of other Internet
technologies, including streaming audio and video,
and chat.
