Certificate of Advanced Study - Archives & Records Administration
The Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Archives and Records Administration consists of 15 credits
of advanced coursework selected by the students in conjunction with the Archival Program Coordinator. The goal of the CAS program is to help working professionals develop a specialty in archives and records administration and to update their knowledge in core areas of their responsibilities. It enables the individual to either alter the direction of a career path or to enrichand strengthen capabilities already inuse. The CAS in Archives and Records Administration can be completed both online and on-site.
General Program Requirements
CAS candidates will complete 15 credits of coursework,
which is planned in conjunction with the Archival Program Coordinator as an individually designed program suited to the student's needs and professional objectives.
- A minimum of 12 credits must be taken in the
School of Information Studies. Up to three credits
may be taken in another school or department
of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
A maximum of three graduate credits may be transferred
from another accredited university provided
the courses are relevant to the candidate's
professional objectives and are included as
part of the total approved program. No thesis
is required, but students may obtain up to six
credits in independent study which is included
as part of the total approved program.
- Students must maintain a grade point average
of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). The program must be
completed within a period of four years from
the date of admission.
CAS Admission Requirements
A Master of Library and Information Science degree
(MLIS) or a Master's degree in a closely related
field such as history, educational technology or computer science is required for admission. Candidates
with little or no coursework in archives administration or records management
are required to take coursework in this area from the SOIS
MLIS program. No specific work experience is
required.

Application to UWM as a Non-degree student is required. When filling out the non-degree application you must indicate in the Applicant Statement, Section IV, that you are applying for the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Archives and Records Administration.
- Student Statement*: Describe your area of interest, professional objectives and career plan
- Two Recommendation Letters*
- Transcripts*: Transcripts from the candidate's Master's Degree Program

There is no deadline for application, however for best consideration and course availability, applicants should submit their materials according to the following guidelines:
- For entry in the Fall semester (beginning in September), apply by March 1
- For entry in the Spring semester (beginning in January), apply by September 1
