The Political Science Department provides opportunities for students to earn course credit while working as interns during the semester at government agencies or other establishments relevant to the field of political science. Students are encouraged to identify internship opportunities themselves, although the Department emails relevant internship announcements to political science majors as they become available to us.
Students wishing to earn course credit for internships must enroll in Political Science 489: Internship in Political Science. There are 2 prerequisites for PS 489: junior standing and a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
In addition to working as interns for a minimum of 114 hours (or 38 hours per credit) during the semester, all students taking PS 489 must do outside reading and complete a substantial research paper. Students are assigned a faculty advisor who works with the student to develop a reading list and supervises the writing of the research paper. The requirements of the internship program are described in the Internship Contract (PDF 8K), which must be signed by all students enrolling in PS 489.
Students enrolled in PS 489 have interned in a variety of places, including the offices of Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, and the Milwaukee Bar Association.
