Merrill Hall Loading Dock and Parking Lot 18
The necessity to resurface this lot, has led to a larger discussion about the implementation of sustainable stormwater management enhancements. It is the second project to progress in the stormwater management plan. Lot 18, bordered by Holton Hall to the south, the Norris Health Center to the west, the Central Heating Plant to the north and east, and by Merrill Hall to the east and south, was of major focus in the report, "UWM as a Zero-Discharge Zone: A stormwater masterplan for the UWM Campus", completed in 2006 by faculty and students from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, with support from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. Existing conditions of the parking lot warrant resurfacing. The shifting base for the current asphalt has led to extensive areas of failure. Water infiltration is an issue because of this failure, as the surface helps to serve as a "cap" over an existing utility tunnel. Over the years, utility projects have lead to a patchwork of repairs, leading to many areas of differential settlement in the lot. A study will document the work required to reconstruct the surface of the lot, adopt a new revenue control system, reconfigure a compromised layout of parking and circulation, and evaluate the feasibility of implementing the sustainable features presented in the stormwater masterplan.
